A lot of it just has to do how very stylized the original is. I LIKE the franchise, but Sonic's particular design never really caught me much.

Love it. The checkered tattoo works both as a reference to his speed, and a subtle homage to Green Hill zone.

Thanks!! The tattoo was definitely intended as a reference to Green Hill zone, but yeah I suppose it doubles up as a Grand Prix style checker flag! :3

I'm so mad because ANYONE could have redesigned him and he would look way better.
This really is so cool, though. I would watch the movie happily if this is what he looked like.

Now this is what movie sonic should have looked like! I just saw the Paramount trailer and... oh man. It's awful.
Very few people actually seem to like it. For me, it's his face and teeth that face he has. Looks like something right out
of a nightmare.

Yeah, I thought it was odd that they were so quick to redo the design, but I don't think it was intentionally bad. Is it possible that they actually give a shit about meeting consumer demands? Maybe they're concerned that the horrible design will mean a huge drop in viewership?
