Located in the middle of a multi-coastal gyre, Balf is a massive island made entirely from refuse. Thousands of years of magical trash buildup in the ocean has all conglomerated in this one spot. Old, decayed plastics mix with rotted woods, rusted metal, and other hardy, laminated materials. The upper crust of the island is a semi-sandy, flat strata baked under the sun and trampled flat under the feet of its inhabitants. Glass beads mix with the dust that blows off this surface, rusted railings opening opening up into the dim, lacquered tunnels of the island. Here, refugees and other eccentric folk carve out a living for themselves from the garbage, harvesting artifacts and other resources from the bowels of the island itself. These tunnels run extremely deep, often traveling miles into the interior before dead ending in a sharp chunk of trash, or dropping out into a dark, barnacle encrusted grotto.
