The Shambler is a very intimidating creature, and not just for his menacing appearance. Despite having a large frame, he is surprisingly fast and difficult to outrun. His electric attack can take up to half your health away, and it will hit unless you're hiding behind something or are outside of his range. Because of his size, he'll try to clobber you with his melee attack if you're even a moderately short distance away. The Shambler is the toughest enemy to kill in the entire game.
Even other monsters fear him, so expect a clobbering. He shrugs off explosions. Good luck.
Quake Champions has a Shambler head cosmetic for Ranger, which is pretty cool. It uses John Romero's vision for the creature, which included the fur coat and a confirmation that it lacked eyes. Despite many members in the Quake community arguing against or for either Romero's vision or John Carmack's vision (Carmack being the one to originally conceptualize the creature and later give his position on the fur debate), Quake Champions settled on Romero's side when it came to making the Shambler head cosmetic.
I took a few hours today to make the Shambler from Quake 1 have a higher resolution texture and that same shaggy coat texture from Quake Champions, and these are the results. I'm quite happy with how he turned out, it didn't take much effort or time to do. Just had to remove the Quake 1 head, reshape the cosmetic from Quake Champions a bit to fit the Quake 1 Shambler body, and then remake the Quake 1 texture to be furry grey/light blue rather than light beige, as it used to be. I have plans to turn this lad into a fursuit, but before any of that I had to have a vision for how he'd even look in full body with the Quake Champions vision in mind, and here he is. I'll also probably include him in the Gladiator Ranger addon for Gmod, which has grown quite a bit in scope since its inception.
