Alrighty then. This is my little baby snake, Strike. Yes, everyone applaud my originality. Thank you, thank you! His name is a misnomer though. I can count the number of times he’s bitten me on one hand and those were all within the 5 month old mark (aka when all little snakies are evil little shits!)
This is my first post and I know that the picture is too big but I hope it still works. Sorry I’m useless when it comes to computers!
Anyway, he’s a centralian carpet python (A Morelia spilota bredli if you want to be technical) but everyone around here just refers to them as a bredli (Bred-el-eye). When he grows up he’ll be about 2.1 metres long (I think that’s about 7 foot) but he’s only a hatchling at 9 months old and a tad over a metre in length. Bredli’s have the reputation of being one of the friendliest Australian snakes and I’ve heard stories about people picking up wild ones without a fuss.
He is more than a mere pet to me, he’s my little angel and I love him to bits! Through all the changes in life he is my one constant and is always there waiting for me at the end of the day to delight me with his antics. He loves a cuddle or being stroked on his belly and does this cute tongue flicking thing in your face if you do a good job so that he can remember what you smell like.
If you live in Australia and are looking for a first snake I highly recommend getting a bredli, they’re the best!

Thank you so much, I'll tell him you said so! I think almost all hatchling snakes are biters, just intimidated by your size or something, but you should have seen this baby Jungle that was there when I went to pick him up, that thing was striking the glass like a machine gun to get to me! Scary stuff.
Really? This is the only one you would get? They are the most docile and I've heard the most interactive, but he's the second dullest, abet with pretty patterns. Have you seen the Diamonds and the different types of Jungles? Very eye-catching. Wait, what's a Jag?
Anyway, I wouldn't swap him for any other snake, and thank you for the complements!

Yeah, Blood Pythons are AWESOME! I just don't have the balls to own one/ can't get my hands on them... Damn you Australian government! *fist shake*
That sounds great how he interacts with people! I can only wait and hope. He must be the best cuddler! Although that's muscle, not literal fat, right? My friend works as a snake catcher/under-the-counter-herp-vet and he's shown me some disturbing photos. Obese snakes don't look too healthy. If you have some pics of him could you post them?
Really? I didn't know that know all hatchies weren't biters. Thanks for sharing that bit on info with me. And your little boy sounds wonderful!

Yes, that is a pity. Australia has a big thing about quarantine, and I suppose that you guys don't need another Burmese python outbreak, or whatever snake it is that is causing trouble in the swamps.
That must feel so nice, that feeling you described! I really want one, they look so huggable!
Oh he looks cute! Not full size yet, but he’ll get there! Thanks you taking the picture for me, be sure to post some when he’s all grown up! It’s great you know how to monitor his fatness level, keep him nice and healthy!

Yeah, stupid people should be shot. There are so many feral species here it’s scary. Being an introduced species myself I shouldn’t complain, but I’m only a threat to the animals in the supermarket shelves. XD
But seriously they are a real problem. Foxes aren’t too bad. They eat the introduced rabbits and cats, the local dingo population keeps them in check, with the aid of farmers. There are five main culprits as far as I know. Feral cats, the result of assholes chucking their pets over the fence like you said, are the main blight. They kill EVERYTHING! Bilbys are these cute mouse-like things and they have been hunted to the brink by them, several bird and mammal species weren’t so lucky. Not to mention they kill cute, innocent reptiles! Bastards! The second most serious are the Indian Mynas, also known as Common Mynas among other names. The have completely *ponders civil vernacular to use* DECIMATED certain types of birds. They steal other birds nests (and kill the eggs) and fill it with toxic materials so that if they ever leave it the eggs of other birds will become malformed, or the chicks will be poisoned. And they use ‘distracter nests’ meaning they take the nest, poison it and leave it so predators get confused.
Cane Toads are a problem because they eat endangered frog species and are poisonous so predators eat them and die. Although three animals are known to hunt them successfully. One bird flips them over and eats from the belly in, another wipes them on the ground to get the poison off and some snake is immune to the poison I think. Aussies have invented a game called ‘cane toad golf’ which is exactly what it sounds like, except they are impossible to kill like this. THEY DON’T DIE!!! Wild Boars are a problem, but hunters are trying to keep their numbers down, same with rabbits. Plants aren’t really a problem here.
Why can’t we have cute reptile ferals? ARPs wouldn’t really do THAT much damage. There are a bucket load of wild pigs here and roos are actually needing to be culled in huge numbers each year. The climate is the same so maybe I’ll bring a few pretties over with me next time I visit family. Scrubbies wouldn’t mind all that much cause they like the forests and ARPs like the desert. Reticulated Pythons, that would be a problem. We have poisonous snakes, so that’s out. Wild Niles would be awesome! Although I would have been killed by now. Komodos!
For the record, Friends and myself go out hunting said ferals quite often. Sorry for the comment spam, it isn’t advisable to get me talking about animals!

They are fantastic snakes! Very friendly! They don't really have any special requirements apart from a liking a couple of branches in their enclosure and a chance to come out and explore once in a while. There is a site called Aussie Pythons and Snakes (if I remember correctly) that allows you to look around at blogs and get useful tips on how to care for your creatures once you have created a free account. Also carpets and bigger snakes can't be bought in shops and must be obtained through a breeder. The site I motioned allows you to easily find breeders. Look around a bit and go for one that has a respectable history. They also don't need to cost the world. If this would be your first snake I highly recommend one of these little guys, they are awesome!
QUEENSLANDER! Yes, go team! I'm glad to have an Aussie comment on an Australian snake for a change.

Sorry about the late reply! :’(
Thank you very much! Yeah, he’s a wonderful little guy and there is no reason to be scared of them remember that old saying that they are more scared of you than you are of them? It holds true.
I KNOW! They look like the greatest lizards ever! According to these videos they actively seek your affection! I mean look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz5mvOpCnvI&feature=related And then this one, how cute isn’t it? Just look at this fella’s face: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPzmXKMcdGU&feature=related Daww!

He's beautiful~
I always had such a spiel about snakes. Misinformation and 'scientific' bullcockery introduced by outdated research and texts. Then my little sister got her Spotted Python Kira...and oh my god, that little thing is the most amazing little creature on earth. They're so expressive and quirky! Not as intelligent or fast of thought as birds (my prefered pets), but certainly remarkably intelligent. It's a bit of a pipe-dream of mine to befriend or own a monitor lizard, but frankly such critters are best out in the wild.
I shall stick to my pompous pigeon. :}

Oh thank you very much!
I am very glad that you like our slithering friends! Quirky, expressive and interesting, that’s them! It is sad that they aren’t more intelligent or affectionate but they can certainly move quickly when required! Have you ever fed Kira when she was hungry? A Spotted Python is an excellent first snake! Your sister made fine choice.
NEVER TRY TO PICK THEM UP IN THE WILD! Some pythons and smaller lizards are fine with it, but not monitors! Seriously please don’t do it. They do make fantastic pets though, once they bond with you they have a dog-like affection. Please check out the links above for cuteness! I can recommend getting one but they are also have an expensive upkeep so maybe wait to you are on your feet first!
Your pompous pigeon?! Hahaha! That is awesome, I’ll have a look for him/her in your gallery when I get a chance!

That is very good to hear! Snakes need more fans!
Well the whole enclosure costed about $350 but I got my little guy at the very low price of $200. They are actually VERY easy to care for! You just need to be smart enough not to let them get away from you and not be scared to get bitten. That only happens when they are young though, once they get older they don’t bite. I thank you very much for the compliment and I hope that you soon have a little guy of your own!

What a little cutie. ^^ I guess this species is venomous, since you are still alive despite being bitten so often? Just curious how hard is it so care for a snake? And how...well, how do they interact with humans? I guess they are not all cuddly like cats or dogs, but teach me otherwise if I am wrong. ^^
I'm just asking, but do you have a plan for when he gets bigger? I love snakes and pythons too, but I'm just really annoyed when people get snakes and when they get too big like with a python, they release them. Thye snake then goes on to ruin the environment around it because its a alpha predator in A LOT of places. You don't seem like one of those kinda people, but I'm just curious what you plan on doing? :) Sorry if I was rude or anything.
