Blacktail's Third trip to the Boonies! (Part 24)
This is part of the lava flow around the Big Pine Cinder Field.
Basalt is a tough, heavy, dark Igneous Rock rich in Iron. It can be spit out of Cinder Cones, as well as flow like maple syrup when fully-molten.
That it was spit-out as cinders near Big Pine is probably because it erupted through Continental Crust --- Basalt erupting from Oceanic Crust is usually more fluid.
