Page 23 references past priests as sword makers. It is implied that sword breaking is both unnatural and in the case of culture, profane considering the swords stand for unity, love, and harmony through action.

The monster asked for an orb previously which was broken by the sword breaker, but the monster has since not asked for another.

The orbs contain memories of the monster. In the past Priests have ripped out these memories and turned them into shackles. Leaving the monster defenseless without much knowledge. To remain alone and bitter with on occasion someone journeying to the cave with a blessed sword to what appears to be to reinforce the prison.

A number of pages back the monster requested the sword breaker to offer the monster one of the orbs. The orb was broken releasing the memory contained within for both to see.
The breaker is now pondering why the monster is showing reluctance to have any more opened.
