Quite simply.
In apocalypse szenarios you always see people go after firearms and ammunition. No one thinks about gun oil and tissues to clean them, not to mention the tools.
I once owned a teargas gun and used it for fireworks on the new years eve. Two magazines, 16 shots and it started to get stuck once in a while. After the third magazine the fireworks were over. A friend's revolver lasted the night efore it needed cleaning.
While it's possible she stashed it, she has not even a bag with her.
If there is an apocalypse and you have a little time, hit the library or book shop and a hardware store. Then take your distance from the cause of the apocalypse and more importantly from other people. While guns are great for short-term survival, for a longer term, knowledge and tools will work much better.

Too much thinking about stuff like that on my part and too many movies about catastrophies in the 70's as well as the cold war will do that. Also certain episode of 'Terrible writing advice" on YouTube.
We know movies get many things wrong and manx people will react as shown during a zombie apocalypse for example, but when it comes what to get? You need stuff that continous to work without the framework civilization provides.
The canned food you can carry will last until it's gone.
The same weight in books about edible plants, basic agriculture, survival and how to build primitive weapons will feed you for a long time to come.
