Rushing down the hall and slightly out of breath, Miranda quickly paced to the office at the end of the hallway. "Couldn't have picked a better time?!" She muttered, reaching the double-doors and composing herself before entering. She wasn't met with the stares of her colleagues, just the head Overseer at her desk. "Ah, Miranda, good timing as ever. Please sit, we've much to discuss, and it's quite important." The Overseer asked, gesturing the chair before her station. The room was adorned with fanciful displays of prior fieldwork of younger years. Each piece growing in grandeur as they peaked with a large, translucent obelisk in the corner. "Now, how would you like a step up in our organization?"
Miranda's meeting with the Overseer was a rush to say the least. The opportunity for being the Overseer's right hand as Watcher was presented as the reward for an interesting assignment. She returned home and was met with a delivery just outside her door. It was more akin to a display screen in terms of size, but was deceptively lightweight. "Enclosed is your new duty set-up. With watchful eyes, Overseer Mera. P.S. Keep in touch, this assignment isn't for the faint of heart." Miranda read off, unsealing the edges of the box, being met with a polymer case and another note. "The contents within are confidential, viewing is limited to encoded user: Miranda Terlay. Unauthorized presentation to undesignated users is punishable by contract termination and legal action." Miranda repeated, flipping the sheet over for any more warnings or fine text. She dug through set-up instructions, biometric confirmation, and an NDA of work duties. It was no doubt very important that only the head of the organization could hear a report, but Miranda believed it to be a step in the right direction.
"Please confirm AR office space: INPUT LOCATION" the screen displayed, presenting a holographic keyboard below the panel. Miranda wasn't surprised that the secretive nature would be a continuous rabbit hole of private spaces, peripheral devices, and encrypted data. She thought about what location made her feel comfy, when she came up with a greenhouse. A small lens was then presented through a sort of pop-out drawer on the side of the terminal followed by the scanning of her wrists and deployment of mechanical arms to place wristbands to track movements. "Neat!" Miranda exclaimed, noticing a pop-up in the corner about 3D printing process complete. Her screen prompted more steps to follow, starting with rotating her hands, moving her fingers, and balling her fists. It was a calibration to interactive movement in the AR space, as the lenses scanned her eyes and began determining the space available. This was truly more than what she first imagined it to be.
Within a few moments more her living space was no more, instead being replaced with the visage of a rooftop garden, devoid of plants, but it was amazing. A beeping from a panel of glass drew her attention, turning cloudy as she approached. "Ah, hello Miranda. I see you've received your AR hub, and that you're already set up too. Excellent, so, let us proceed then..." the Overseer began. It was a briefing about her new role as Observer, a step from Watcher, but only an assignment away from the coveted role. On file they had the events of the past on record, from a time long since passed, but with crucial knowledge that had yet to be learned in such a way. It was the starting of fheir company from under a millennium prior, with the invention of advanced tech such as memory scanning, exoplanet terraforming, and perhaps a lost draft to unending life. Miranda would be getting a firsthand view at their founder and industry leader to their Golden Age, using a more simplistic approach than full memory-diving.
Starting up the program the greenhouse was being filled with seed packets and ceramic pots. It was a sort of gimmick used to organize specific developments of information, in this case each packet contained a crucial line to develop. "Oh, ha ha, just like that one game series that dealt with genetic memory from the early twenty-first century. Geez, that franchise is STILL going. Too bad we only got that tech like three centuries ago." Miranda commented, thinking back to her childhood hobby of perusing ancient entertainment mediums and primitive depictions of what could be the future. "I think there was another more interactive game than that with AR as a plot device. Seemed kinda cheesy, but the game after the next one was awesome." She continued, digging through the available topics. She came upon one of interest to her, picking it up, in a sense as there wasn't any feeling to the display, and reading the title. "This moment in time. Huh, sounds like a poem or line in a song. All right, let's get these ideas growing!" She said, placing the 'seeds' of thought into the corresponding pot. What came next was a shifting of colors, changing of sounds, and actual tactile feeling all around. And in a moment, she was someone else, but it was still her, in someone else's life.
