Anazu
Oh my god you guys you don't know how embarrassed I am right now and how hard I laughed at my old artworks from way back thenBrock Lesnar Grimace Icon
As part of the 10+yrs art challenge, I decided to redesign Anazu. The artwork to the left was done 11yrs ago on a program called "Deep Paint". God did I hated that program. To the right is her fresh new take on her. Such a major change in my art direction. I was young and immature and didn't grasp the concept of making a character sexy without making it slutty. However, the more older I got the more I realized: Drawing less clothes isn't always a way to make a character sexy. So I abandoned her sling bikini and....loin cloth? A new design means a new take and backstory.
The First Concept:
Anazu was originally a heavy design of a particular character made from another artist. The reason: Well there shouldn't have been. I was about 11-12yrs old at the time and didn't care about respecting other artist's designs, instead I wanted their design and "improve" on their original. Boy, was I wrong. I only drew Anazu for the purpose of having a sexy character into my roster and that was basically it. Not to mention her name is as similar to that character.
The New Concept:
Here we are in 2019. A lot has changed for me and many of my characters. To be honest I completely forgot about her, a lot of characters I drew from my early tweens I literally threw away or just mentally forgot they ever existed. Mainly because I was so ashamed of myself and how I behaved back then that some I didn't want to look at anymore. Anazu was one of those. However, a spark took a hold of me this year and told myself, not only I have worked on myself and learn to love myself. I also learned to love my artwork again and take pride in it. Being on Instagram for about 4yrs now, there has been an art challenge going around. The 10yr art challenge. People were redesigning or redrawing artworks or characters. And I hopped on and started searching through and guess what, I found Anazu. Boy, did I have a laugh. I originally was going to draw her in my current art style and kept the clothes she had, but then I realized...no, I want to completely redesign her and give her a new purpose. And so I did. And here we are. I got rid of her skimpy outfit and given her an elegant feel as it felt very right with her. I kept the name Anazu instead of changing. It just grew on me. Now she looks nothing like that character she was literally based off of.
Original Backstory
I tried giving her own story at one point in time. There's not much to be said really. If you guys know Cutie Honey, that's basically Anazu's backstory just minus the main heroine being an android. Anazu is not an android. The add on was that Anazu was accompanied with 20 other female heroine with the same powers as her and fight evil.....and yeah. Pretty generic right? I will never forget the laughable title to the story "Madame Rikiakoure". Lol don't ask me cause even I don't know what that title was supposed to be. All I remember I used to make up words and names and it just flowed and there you go.
New Backstory
I had a lot of planned stories to make when I was younger, but the older I got the more they sounded pretty generic or nothing interesting at all. So majority of them have been scrapped/tossed out/forgotten, however you want to put it. However, a lot of the characters I've made for those stories have been recycled and redesigned into my current stories. I felt they had potential therefor gave them a second chance. Anazu was one of those. After I redesigned Anazu, it was like her new backstory was literally written right then and there in my mind as if I knew it for many years. I abandoned the idea of her being a magical being that can interchange clothes as the battle calls and trying to save the day. So instead I made her an anti-heroine. She no longer has her own story, instead she plays an important role into the "ARGONE series". So what is she now? She's a Devil or also known as the Elder. In the series, Devils are the most respected hierarchy that keep the balance of nature if chaos calls for it. They rewrite and change the course of history since they are considered the "Chosen Ones". Anazu is the Devil of Destruction. As the name suggests, if anything in power or a timeline that is out of order, she goes in and completely destroys it making it restart from its mistakes. She's powerful, but yet calm and playful even if her duty is to completely wipe out a whole race or the whole world, she always seems collective.
Fresh Look
The new fresh look is that I completely got rid of the sluttyness. Instead I felt her being more clothed and in a dress was more suitable and sophisticating. She has an Elvira-esk look to her, so a more of a goth look. That doesn't mean all the Devils are gonna have that Gothy edge look. I was originally going for a tight mermaid dress with flared out train, but I realized she is a fighting magic type character, so I decided with an open slit dress. As for color choice, I didn't want to keep the vibrant red and purples, because again it looked exactly like the character she based off of, but I also didn't want to have her entire color palette being black. I played with the colors for a little bit and then I had an idea. Why not take the vibrant red and purple and desaturate them? Her new color palette is basically a darkened and desaturated of the original red and purple from the old artwork. Pretty cool huh? The only original color from the old one is her fur color. As for her wings, lol don't get me started. I don't know what's up with those swirls. Her new wings don't got the swirlzzzzz. They are bat wings, but I added a little twist of almost bird feathers. You know, like dinosaurs supposedly not only they had scaly hardened skin, they also had feathers on them here and there such as the Velociraptors. So it's not a mixed bird wing/bat wings. Her wings however is not meant for long flights they are more like high jumping and hovering/gliding. The one thing I did keep are her swords. That might change later, because I keep seeing her with a scythe instead.
