Those of you who read Little Tales know that I'm currently drawing an adaption of a Chesterton story to try and get my graphic comic story style tightened up and practiced. The story has roughly a year left to it, and then I plan to do my own unique work involving this fellow.
This is Kryst, a rat from my 'Blood From a Stone' series. He's a detective and will be the main focus in the series which will be a bunch of supernatural investigations set in a town called Brackton. I'm drawing him to get my hands used to his design so he'll be consistent when I start drawing it regularly. In this particular image, he's had to tell a family some bad news and is taking a moment to calm his nerves with a smoke. Normally his hair isn't slicked back like that, but he'll do it to try and look presentable.
A lot of backstory for what amount to a photoshop sketch. and I still need to get a proper handle on Kryst's design. Still not too sure if I want to keep that goatee on him or not.

Impressive character here, Gen. I love how you've kept the jacket and pants so simple, and yet they are still very effectively portrayed.
Looking at face, though, it's hard to tell what he's feeling. If I hadn't read the backstory you posted, I would think he had just stepped out for a casual smoke. I realize you said this is only a sketch, so I'm probably digging a bit too far here.

Actually that's pretty observant! Kryst is a really reserved and somewhat expressionless character. He feels things and has as much of an emotional range as most people, but he doesn't show them. It annoys a lot of his friends and co-workers because the animal people (called Familiars in his world) rely on animal body language to a certain extent, and he doesn't have much of a range about it. There's a reason why, but that would be telling ;)
Why, yes; he does look presentable! I do not mean the handsome slicked-back hair (which has a color that goes nicely with his general fur color), but his coat and pipe also add to his class. This gives him a feeling of being "old and wise."
The background definitely gives the environment a sense of night (with good execution of color theory), but I think that the background would benefit from either more elements or less. (I do not know...)
