I guess I still don't get the reference

Russian historical figures.

Rasputin was a real life Russian historical political figure. He was assassinated, but according to legend, he was poisoned, shot, thrown in a freezing river, and finally died (supposedly) due to drowning. Thus, a myth about him being hard to kill and being in league with dark magic was formed.

But for the purposes of this comic, he's basically Kenny from South Park...
