I did something similar to this a little under two months ago. Still waiting to get my car back to a serviceable state.

Was the damage severe?

Not really, but my insurance company still wrote the vehicle off as a total loss. The collision repair center the insurance company sent me to wanted to replace the bent quarter panel (a new one costs around $3,000, not including labor), as well as a few other components, but the car is only worth roughly $6,000 to the insurance company. They basically wrote me a check and told me I was on my own as far as fixing it goes.

Long story short, if you buy a used car, don't get into an accident.

I’ll keep that in mind.

I plan on keeping it for as long as I can. I did have the option of giving it to my insurance company so they could sell it at auction, but I chose to keep it and get it repaired instead. It's very special to me.
