The PokeCombat Academy was a school that was held in high regard and was one of the greatest sources of recruits for the professional battler ranks. Many of its graduates went on to be champions, famous fighters or leaders of other industries. First and foremost it was, however, a high school where the students had many of the same concerns that any other high school student had. Beyond the worries about homework and trying to get the car on Friday nights, dances could cause even the most stoic of ‘mon to panic in the face of not going or going alone. It wasn’t uncommon to watch as students dashed about to make last minute arrangements and try to figure out what they were doing. Some had the hectic approach and asked everyone that they knew and a few that they didn’t. Others tried to be calmer about it or at least seemed to be on the surface.
Andrew Plio was one such student. A freshman, the young ‘mon’s first experience at a dance had been one he’d not soon forget. His date had been a friend who was more than happy to show him a good time, even if she had no intention of it going beyond being friendly. While he’d enjoyed it immensely he wasn’t sure if he wanted to go with her again since he had hoped for it to be more. Rather than torture himself he decided that he’d go regardless, but take a different date along. He still enjoyed time with Hannah and hung out with her, but she was also neck deep in guys who wanted to take her as well so instead Andrew decided to go another route. He approached three students, teammates, who were chatting with one another and laughing, at least two of them were. The third, the one he was headed towards, sat quietly as she listened to her teammates. She did perk up when she saw Andrew, someone she’d met before and talked to on occasion.
“Oh, hello Andrew,” the quiet Rattata girl, Delilah Wildflower, said in greeting. Andrew snorted and squealed out a greeting himself in the thick accent that was common to his species the Piloswine. Delilah had slowly been getting used to how to understand him, though it was still difficult in spots. She stopped short and looked shocked when she muddled her way through and heard what it was he asked.
“What? What is it?” Athena Teutopolis, Delilah’s teammate and friend asked. Dorian Glittershell, their other teammate that was also there, watched on curiously as he wasn’t sure either since neither could understand him.
“Did…did you just…ask me to the dance?” Delilah asked Andrew as she tried to shrink and get smaller. Once Andrew gave a nod of affirmation her two teammates looked between each other then moved to block any kind of escape she might have.
“She’d love to go with you,” Athena assured the Piloswine.
“B-but!” Delilah tried to protest.
“Pick her up at seven, we’ll make sure she’s got a dress,” Dorian added. Andrew couldn’t help but smile at the whole scene, not surprised based on what she’d heard from Delilah about her teammates. The younger ‘mon smiled and gave a wave to them all and said some sort of farewell and said one more thing to Delilah before he turned and started to walk away.
“Why!?” was all the Rattata girl could ask the other two in exasperation.
“Because,” Athena started.
“It’ll be good for you,” Dorian added. Delilah just gave a small cry and buried her face in her hands. It wasn’t that she wasn’t going to enjoy being asked out to the dance…she just wasn’t sure if she was going to enjoy the dance.
“What am I going to do?!” Daaku Reji paced about his dorm room worried about something as he often did. The formal was coming and he knew for sure that he was going to go with his girlfriend, Blueberry Swirl, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was in their mutual friend and Blue’s roommate, Freya Glachill, whom had become very close to the duo. The last thing that Reji wanted to do was leave her out but he also didn’t want to upset his girlfriend and make her think that he cared more for her friend than her.
“I really think yer makin’ a bigger deal out of it than you should, Reji my boy,” His roommate, Jonas King, told him. The newly minted Persian sat backwards on a chair and rested his arms on the top of the back. He was greatly amused by the whole scene and didn’t envy his buddy’s situation even if for a while he envied him having a pair of hotties that liked him.
“But…but…but…” Reji was as eloquent as ever, “I don’t want either of them being upset!” The Golduck sighed and let his arms fall to the side.
“I don’t know if I can pay for it all either!” He added. Jonas stood up and pressed the chair aside as he strolled over to his buddy.
“C’mon, boyo. You’ve learned more than that in dealin’ with things,” He assured him, “Ya just need to go and let them know about what you’re worried about,”
“But…” Reji tried to protest but Jonas brought up a hand to stop him.
“No buts!” the Persian answered, “And no going um! Ye’ve gone all semester and still do it!” Reji tried to protest but knew that his friend was right. With a nod of his head he took in a deep breath and steeled himself. Jonas gave him a pat on the shoulder then a smack on his butt to get him going, and to keep him off guard. The Golduck jumped a bit but headed out and down the hall towards his goal. Blue and Freya lived in the dorm next door so he had plenty of time to think about everything, which could be dangerous for Reji. He continued to press one foot in front of the other into the next building and up the stairs until he found himself in front of their door when he stopped suddenly.
Reji brought a hand up to try and knock on the door but it froze. All the doubts that he’d tried to bury on the way over suddenly surged up and assaulted his mind. The worry about money, about leaving someone upset, every bit of it tried to get him to turn right around and walk away. Then he pictured Blue, and how she’d react to him giving up. He thought about what Jonas had told him, and about what Amelia would say if he didn’t go for it. With another deep breath Reji steeled himself and started to knock on the door…only to have it suddenly open on him and nearly cause him to stumble forward and into the room.
“Oh good, there you are,” Blue and Freya both met him with a smile. Reji blinked a few times as he was suddenly pulled inside. The two didn’t ask him any questions and instead moved him over to where they had their sewing equipment all set up.
“There’s…there’s something I need to talk to, well, you two about,” the Golduck started. The two just nodded as they started to measure him. Freya called out a number of measurements as she went through with a tape measure while Blue jotted them down. The Froslass took the liberty to grope him while she had the chance which caused the Golduck to blush deeply.
“We’ll be heading out about five and going to our favorite sushi place,” Blue told Reji who turned towards her and nodded.
“That should be good…”
“We’ve got both of our kimonos set so that shouldn’t be a problem and we’ll get yours done by the end of the week,” Freya added.
“Oh, well, okay…”
“Already talked to Jonas about sharing a cab with him and Amelia to save money on our way,” Blue continued as she started to pull out some material and make some selections.
“Wait…is…is everything already planned out?” Reji asked suddenly as everything started to dawn on him.
“’fraid so, Ducky!” Freya told him and gave his butt a pat as well. The Golduck stood there in wonderment as everything he’d prepared to talk to them about came crashing down. He’d worked through everything he was going to say in his head only for it to be rendered moot by the two ladies that he was worried about upsetting. His shoulders slumped slightly as he resigned himself to doing as he was being told. Both of the girls noticed it and giggled slightly.
“Oh no being like that, Reji,” Blue kissed his cheek, “Just think of it as us taking a load off your shoulders since you’re dealing with your team,”
“Yeah,” Freya kissed the other cheek, “You’ve been busy with things lately, Ducky, no reason we couldn’t take care of it,”
“I suppose,” he conceded and smiled at the affection, “Just, well…wanted to do this right. You know?”
“Oh we know, hun,” Blue assured him, “No need to worry about it though. It’s all set and it’s going to be a lot of fun,”
“We just need ya to take off your pants,” Freya added.
“Uhhh, what?” Reji blinked in sudden surprise.
“One week!” Blue gleefully exclaimed. The Golduck slapped his forehead as he found himself caught once more. With a sigh he did as he was asked and started to pull his pants down to giggles from the girls. At the very least he didn’t have to worry about upsetting anyone at the dance, and knew he’d have fun going with the both of them.
“I dunno. I feel kinda funny like this,” Rupert Snales had been to dances before with his girlfriend. Usually in the past he’d just gone and used his grandpa’s old suit that was, thankfully, not powder blue and didn’t have any ruffles to it but he’d been told that it was time for a new look by his girlfriend.
“Oh you’re going to look just dashing in your new vest and shirt, hun,” Marie Allmon assured the giant Magcargo. His buddy Kenjiro “Kreep” Kudzu snickered quietly behind him with drew a glare from the big fire type. Kreep tried to give him an innocent look but it didn’t do much good.
“Ya sure this is going to look just fine and people ain’t gonna laugh at me?” Rupert asked once more as he turned himself in front of the mirror to get a better look. He had to admit it wasn’t a bad look for him, but it was different because he was used to more rugged or sporty clothing.
“I think it looks great, Rupert,” Bliss Tetonics, Kreep’s Skuntank’ girlfriend assured the large ‘mon. She also smacked her boyfriend upside the head lightly in order to get him to stop laughing. The Carvanah just looked to Bliss and winked at her.
“Isn’t my fault I look sexy in clothes like this and Rupert don’t,” Kreep said as he modeled himself in front of the mirror. A similar get up that made him look almost dignified. Bliss suddenly grinned behind him and walked to be at his side.
“I’ve got one more thing for you to try on,” she told him. Kreep turned to his girl and smiled.
“Sure, anythin’ for you,” he assured her. That’d been what Bliss wanted to hear and she suddenly pulled a pink and black vest from around her back with a matching pink bowtie.
“I think you’d look wonderful in this,” she told him. Kreep suddenly turned a little pale as he fully caught sight of the outfit. He quickly looked over towards Marie and Rupert for some support but found none as they both held in their laughs at the scene. He gave a glance back towards Bliss and tried to figure out how to get out of even trying the get-up on let alone find himself wearing it to the formal. Kreep soon gave a resigned sigh as he realized there was no way out and took the clothes to head in and try them on.
“Thanks for dat,” Rupert said to Bliss, “That was awesome,”
“I know,” Bliss winked back at Rupert as Marie gave a little giggle. Marie then looked up towards her man and gave his arm a gentle pat.
“Okay, let’s get you out of this outfit so we can pay for it,” she told him, “Then we’ll go get some food,”
“Sounds like a plan to me!” Rupert quickly made his way into the dressing room to get changed and left the two girls laughing at the antics of their beaus.
It wasn’t uncommon at the dance for many of the younger students to get there before the older ones did. Experience had taught them when was the best time to show up to take advantage of all the entertainment as well as the best snacks. The bonus for the younger kids was that they could show up and not feel as self conscious about themselves. The music usually wasn’t too bad and those that liked to dance often had the floor to themselves as well.
“This yer first dance lahk this?” Cash Bailer asked his girlfriend and date. The girl with him looked around and took it all in with a lot of curiosity. She looked to him and smiled broadly before she nodded her head vigorously.
“First one, yes,” Nono Nonomura answered and clung to his arm tightly, “Mom no let me go do things like this back home,”
“Glad I could get ya out then,” the Skorupi laughed and lead her further inside. Nono happily walked with him and reached out with a hand to snag a snack as they walked by the refreshment table. The two turned a corner and headed further into the dance area once they’d dropped off their coats.
“Oh hey, there’s Stella,” Cash suddenly said and waved to a girl a few tables over. Nono immediately locked her eyes towards the girl with a glare as she hugged onto Cash’s arm even tighter.
“What the shit? Who Stella?” Nono suddenly asked. Cash looked down at her clenching and then looked towards the girl, Estella Astrobe, who made her way over towards Cash with a smile.
“Stella! Meet Nono, my girl,” he introduced the two girls, “Nono, dis is Stella, she’s a friend of mine from ‘round,” Nono suddenly gave the Jirachi a sickeningly sweet smile that didn’t seem natural. Stella looked at her a bit oddly but smiled anyway.
“Heya, good to see you, Cash. Nice to meet you, Nono,” Stella said as she looked between the two. She noticed Nono had grabbed onto his arm hard and hoped he had some feeling in his claws.
“So ya here on a date?” Cash asked the bright and shiny Jirachi. She shrugged her shoulders in response and motioned towards someone who had been at the same table.
“Friend of mine asked if I wanted to go for fun,” she answered, “Neither of us really had anyone that we wanted to go with,” Nono’s grip slowly started to lessen on his arm which drew a smile from the Skorupi because he could feel blood flowing in the limb again.
“That to bad,” Nono suddenly said with the same saccharinely sweet smile, “You no have boy you want take you like I do,” She smiled up at Cash who gave a bit of a nervous chuckle.
“First boyfriend, first dance,” Cash answered the confused look on Stella’s face. The Jirachi just gave an “Ohhhh,” look and nodded her head.
“Well I’d better get back to my friend,” Stella said. Nono seemed to relax a bit more before the Jirachi turned her head again and smiled to Cash, “Maybe we can have a dance later,” Nono eyes bulged open as she threw her arms tightly around Cash’s neck before he could answer.
“He busy dancing tonight! No time others!” she called out after Stella who left with a giggle. Nono fumed as she stood there, her boyfriend tightly bound in her arms. She turned her attention towards him as he tapped her arm and then pointed out that he wasn’t able to breathe. Nono flushed in embarrassment as she let him go so Cash could take in a breath. He gasped a few times as she tried to hover over him though he waved it off.
“C’mon,” He coughed to her as he straightened and took her arm, “Let’s go get our pictuah taken,” That seemed to calm Nono down who smiled and went with him, glad that he didn’t have to worry about Cash taking advantage of her by doing anything with anyone else; especially since she had a spike with his face on it if he did.
“This is gonna be fun!” Some people looked forward to the formal more than others. For many students any excuse to party was a good excuse especially if they could do it with others and show off their dance move. For some they went more because it was a formality that they should go because it was part of the whole high school experience. Often times they’d go to the formal together thanks to being teammates trying to save some money on getting there.
“Know what you mean, babe,” Gary Elmond said in response to his girlfriend, Ellis Belton, declaration about the dance. The two went arm and arm inside and looked jazzed to be there; they knew they were going to make it a night to remember. Just behind them Ellis’ teammates Molly Johnson and Jasper Drake also made their way in as they glanced around a bit more nervously. The two were not the most social of students and usually only went out when it was with their friends or teammates.
“Mmmm, I have never been big on large gatherings like this, you know that Ellis,” Molly answered the other.
“Maybe if ya’ll went out more ya’ll would be!” Ellis quickly countered. Gary chuckled as he held out his arm.
“I’ll take our coats over to the checker, babe,” Ellis smiled and took hers off to hand it to him before she leaned in to give him a kiss.
“Thanks, Doll,” she answered and giggled. Molly glanced towards Jasper as she started to remove her own jacket.
“Perhaps it would be a good idea to check out coats as well,” she suggested. Jasper nodded and took the offered clothing before he started towards the checker.
“I will be back in a bit,” He said as he gave a fond touch to her shoulder. Soon the two boys were on their way over to wait in line for a moment to make sure they didn’t have to worry about anything getting misplaced. The two girls stood around together with different reactions to the stimuli going on around them. Ellis looked around and took it all in decorations, dresses, ‘mon, sights and sounds. Molly, instead, glanced down to the ground and all but tried to avoid eye contact with anyone who might walk by.
“What’s yer issue, girl?” Ellis asked her friend and teammate. Molly gave a little shrug as she finally looked up towards the Metang.
“I am just not used to being among so many people is all,” she admitted. Ellis smirked and wrapped a metal arm around the Combusken’s shoulder to lead her further in.
“Hun, ya’ll ain’t gonna enjoy life if ya’ll spend yer time hidin’ from it!” Ellis gestured out towards the growing number of students, “Ya gotta live,”
“I suppose,” Molly answered with a slight shrug. Ellis just sighed and looked at her friend.
“Promise me ya’ll are gonna try and have some fun tonight, a’ight?” Molly looked at Ellis and wanted to just assuage her fears, but it took a moment for it to come out. Eventually the Combusken nodded and closed her eyes.
“I will do my best,” she finally responded.
“All I can ask of ya’ll,” Ellis said before she gave the other a quick hug, “Now c’mon, the boys are comin’ back and I wanna cut a rug!” sure enough Gary and Jasper returned a few moments later and the couples locked arms.
“Let’s go hit the dance floor!” Gary said and took her quickly to the middle of said floor. Ellis giggled and happily went along with him. Soon enough the duo had a small group of other students hooting and cheering them on as they swung each other around. Molly watched it all and couldn’t help but smile just a little bit to see Ellis enjoying herself so much.
“Maybe we could do that later,” Molly suggested to Jasper. The young ‘mon blinked and looked over to Molly a bit surprise.
“I…suppose. If you want to,” He answered. Molly shrugged her shoulder a bit as if not sure if she should push it later or not. For now she just angled herself over to a table as she continued to watch the two dance.
