Godzilla19943 for Haley Long of Jake Long American Dragon facing a drowning peril that the star of Balto faced when he became trapped under the ice. She is using air that is trapped under the ice to stay alive. The illusionist Harry Houdini told a story similar about being trapped under the ice. Many people feel he exaggerated what happened, but even that is scary. Here is a version of this told by Houdini himself A tip of the hat to Wild About Harry blog for helping this story:
My Battery predicament, however, wasn't quite as terrifying as a situation in which I found myself in Pittsburgh several years ago. During and engagement there it had been advertised that on a certain day I should be handcuffed and chained and placed in a box and dropped into the river from a bridge.
Nature was unkind, however, and when the day came the river had been frozen over to a depth of seven inches, which, as a matter of fact, wasn't surprising, as it was midwinter. But ice-water never has had any terrors for me, and a hole was cut in the ice just below the bridge and everybody, including a crowd of several thousand of persons, arrived on time.
With the handcuffs and chains in place, I was put into the trunk, with in turn was bound with ropes and chains. Then the trunk was dropped into the river through the hole in the ice. The handcuffs and chains about my arms and legs and the bound trunk offered no more than the usual difficulties, but when I found myself free of them all I discovered that I had drifted with the current and when I attempted to rise my head bumped against the seven inches of ice. Fully conscious of the seriousness of the situation I looked about in the hope that a greater light might come through where the hole was and give me my directions. But there was no guiding light.
Then I knew that I must breathe. I was under the water longer than the allotted time. And breathing meant that I should drown and go on drifting for weeks and months. But as I had never before given up, I didn't give up then. Instead, I found and "air pocket," a space in which the ice seemed to curve upward, leaving and inch or more of room between the surface of the water and the ice above. I lay flat on my back, tight up against the ice, and breathed. Then I found that the water came in little intermittent waves and that by keeping my face close against the ice I could move about and get and occasional breath. I still held in my hands the handcuffs that I had removed from my wrists, and with these pressed against the ice I began a circular movement. And suddenly I bobbed up through the hole, and the men reached down and lifted me out onto the ice, wrapped me up and hurried me to my hotel.
The crowd that had come to see me and my assistants believed that I had been drowned and, although I didn't hear it, they say that a mighty cheer went up when I appeared.
Haley Kay Long is Jake's intelligent, goody-two-shoes little sister. She, and many others, think she is cute.
Like Jake, Haley also has dragon powers. A prodigy in everything else, her dragon heritage, while not yet fully developed, start to express themselves at a much earlier age than Jake's did. Part of that may be due to dragon girls developing their powers earlier than boys, as her mother Susan Long, explained.
Haley takes pride in exposing Jake's mischievous behavior to their parents, as well as showing off her own "superior" talents. At first only able to express isolated parts of her dragon form, such as her claws, snout, wings or tail. after about a year she was already able to perform a full body morph into her adolescent dragon form, prompting her to begin her own dragon training under Sun Park's guidance as the reserve or substitute American Dragon should Jake be unable to fully perform his duties. Haley took many aspects of her training with Sun Park and applied them in her daily life, which put her at odds when compared with average and normal human kids her age.
Haley also takes delight in making her brother look less than competent as a dragon. However, like most troublesome siblings, she actually has a deep-rooted respect for Jake, and when she was required to step up and take on the duties of Substitute American Dragon for two weeks, she fully realized exactly what all her brother had to deal with on a daily basis. After nearly having her "perfect" school performance levels drop drastically and nearly suffering a breakdown, if a rare case of openly supporting her brother, Haley openly admitted that Jake had been for his age doing a far better job balancing his human life against his magical duties than she was able to do, and that the adults needed to "step off" and allow him the chance to occasionally be a teenage boy.
Just before that, Haley had been so concerned with being a Good Girl that she has never intentionally gotten into trouble or broke rules; that doing something bad was against her nature. Something she did one day by completely breaking character to live a day as a Bad Girl, and in reaping the consequences learned the value of balancing fun with her ridged life.
She was present when Rose betrayed Jake before, in turn, destroying the Huntsclan. She also took part in the final battle against the Dark Dragon in Hong Kong, when her father learned the truth about his dragon daughter and family. Showing how far she had grown in just two years, Haley was able to to be happy for her older brother, cheering when he was reunited with Rose in the aftermath of banishing the Dark Dragon through a magical portal which would not open again for a thousand years.
Haley possesses all the abilities of a young dragon her age. Like Jake, they have yet to reach their full potential. Instead of going into a situation without a strategy she always thinks of a plan needing little to no violence. She also always manipulates her enemies into giving up. Although she was not as strong as Jake or older dragons she was way faster.
