The story continues as the cat clan to which Kate belongs attack Rhodey and his friends, but she secretly helps him escape.
Another day, they Rhodey came out of his turf, and went for a walk. Then some fellow mice came up to him and said:
“Hey, Rhod, what’s up?”
“Morning, guys. Everything’s fine. Better than ever.”
“Really? Hey, I heard the nearby cheese shop will scrap the best samples of old cheese.”
“Ricotta!”
“Parmesan!”
“And the best one of all, Cheddar!”
“That sounds nice!” Rhodey said.
“Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
Meanwhile, in another side of the city, Kate was also going for a walk. Then, some fellow cats said to her:
“Hey, Kate! Where have you been lately? It seems like you have become more active. What’s the reason?”
Kate got nervous and tried to invent an excuse for her absence so the cats couldn’t find out about her relationship with Rhodey.
“Well, lately… I’ve been… taking breaks, you know, having some… me time. I think everyone in our clan should take them.”
“Hey, you’re right! We should consider asking permission to our boss for this someday. Oh, by the way, the boss wants all cats to meet at his turf. We better hurry, if we don’t want to answer to him.”
Later a cat meeting started, and all alley cats from that part of the city came together to hear their boss’s announcement. It was Bruise, an exotic cat with large paws.
“Attention! Pay attention, please! Listen up. Our sneaky spies just saw a few mice heading to the cheese store. It’s a perfect chance to take them by surprise.”
Kate heard this and feared that Rhodey might be one of the mentioned mice.
“As you might know, mice have been our enemies, but mainly mine, for a long time, ever since my dreadful past. My owner threw me into the street only because my paws were too big to catch the mice in the house. I was alone, cold and abandoned. But as time passed by, I found my special talent. My big paws, of course! With only one hit I could turn a mouse into mousse! Then I found you, guys, The Street Cats. And I defeated all of you by showing you my special power. And that’s how I became Bruise, the boss cat!”
All the cats cheered him:
“Indeed, boss!”
“I’m sorry you had to pass through that!”
“We’re not like that ungrateful ex-owner of yours!”
“You’re wonderful!”
So, isn’t there anybody else who wants to challenge me, OR DO YOU WANT ME TO PROVE IT TO YOU AGAIN?!”
“No,no,no,no. Of course not!”
“The wounds you gave us lasted for more than a week!”
“You’re the best, Bruce!”
When he heard this, Bruise angrily turned to see that last cat.
“BRUCE?! Did you just call me… BRUCE?!”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!”
“That’s not my name anymore! I am BRUISE! And I’m going to show you why!”
So Bruise gave the cat such a hard blow on the head that it even made him spin in the air briefly and fall to the ground.
The cats stared, shocked.
“Fine. Where was I? Oh, right. Now, let’s go for those mice!”
All the cats cheered again.
“I’ll demonstrate that I’m actually useful, something that my owner never learned!”
And so, the cat clan charged towards where Rhodey and the other mice were. Kate had no other option than following them, however, she was not gonna let them eat her forbidden boyfriend. So she had a plan.
Meanwhile, outside the Cheese Shop, Rhodey and his friends were having a meal.
“Wow, thanks, guys! This Ricotta tastes marvelous! But it would taste better with some Italian sauce and pasta.”
“And this fresh cheese would taste incredible in a quesadilla or an omelet!”
“Gasp! Dudes! There is no time to enjoy food! Look!”
That mouse pointed with his finger at some direction, and Rhodey and the other mice turned to that direction. And they saw a big group of cats approaching them!
“CATS!” The four of them yelled.
So they scattered to find where to hide. The cats tried to find them searching all over the place.
Rhodey separated from his friends and hid behind some cheese wheels. But he was found by a cat. Was it an enemy? No. It was Kate!
“KATE!”
“Shhh! Rhodey!” She whispered. “Do not shout! They’ll find you! I’m so happy to see you too, but I must get you out of here!”
There was no other option for Kate than grabbing Rhodey with her mouth so that she could take him secretly to safety.
She came out from behind the cheese wheels with Rhodey and left the place as fast as she could.
“Hey, look, there goes Kate!” some cat said.
Kate looked behind her, starting to worry.
“And she already caught a mouse! Look at us, we still have our paws empty!
“You’re right, we must follow her example. Come on!”
Kate sighed in relief and kept going.
“Hey, I kinda like your breath.” Rhodey said, still in her mouth.
“Huh. Thank you.”
Back at the Cheese Store, Rhodey’s friends fought back.
“Hungry, furballs? Then taste this!”
They pushed some cheese wheels down a ramp and toward the cats. Some got hit by them and some avoided them, then all cats retreated.
“Oh, yeah! How you like them cheeses?”
“That was fun, wasn’t it, Rhod? …Rhod?”
“Oh, no! The cats captured Rhodey! We must rescue him!”
While the cats and Bruise were running away, he said to them.
“You incompetents! Once more we’ll have to dine on leftovers from the trashcans!”
“Wait, what about Kate?” one cat asked.
“She caught a mouse and then left.” Another one said.
“Don’t worry about her. The girl is already growing up. We must let her eat alone.” Bruise said. “In fact, I’m quite proud of Kate. She proved to be a good hunter, unlike YOU!”
Meanwhile, Kate had already run very far until she arrived at Rhodey’s home. There she let him go.
“Why, thanks for saving my life, Kate!”
“You’re welcome, Rhodey.”
He thought for a moment and said:
“But, you could have accidentally eaten me back there…”
“Oh, I’m so sorry, but it was the only way to keep you safe from my partners.”
“They worked with you?!”
“Yes, but I’m not like them, and you know it! Besides, I would never eat my long time best friend.”
“For you, and just for you, I’d let you eat me.”
“Oh, Rhodey, I love you so much!”
“Me too, Kate.”
What they didn’t know is that a black cat, that had been banished from Bruise’s clan long ago because he was thought to bring bad luck, had observed them and their whole conversation. As expected, he was shocked to find out their relationship, so he felt the necessity to go tell his former clan the news.
“Jinx?!” Bruise said when he saw the black cat. “What do you think you’re doing here? I exiled you because of your jinxing presence!”
“I know, Bruise.” Jinx said. “But I must tell you something. It’s something very important.”
“Sigh. Ok. What is it? Do not bring us to a bad luck situation.”
“I saw a girl. I believe she belonged to your clan.”
“Oh, you mean Kate? Well, that doesn’t sound unfortunate. On the contrary, she managed to catch a mouse! So, how is she?”
“That’s what I wanted to tell you. She was talking to that mouse. Not eating him. But worst of all, she said she LOVED the mouse!”
All cats gasped loudly.
“WWWHAAAAAAAT?!” Bruise yelled. “How could this be possible? No, you must be lying to me.”
“Oh, come on, believe in me at least once! My eyes never fool me!”
“So, Kate didn’t capture that mouse. She… helped him… ESCAPE! If this is true, I want you all to find Kate and bring her to me, immediately. We’re gonna fix this.”
