Sooooooo.... This is one of the several stones in particular that I got burned on. It -looks- close to emerald, convincingly so, but it is not. While I am telling you all this is quartz, I was told this was Emerald upon purchase. As you can expect.... I ended up paying far more than necessary, and the initial reason why I have been pressing so hard to get a Refractometer.

This is absolutely convincing while being passed off as an emerald, however there is one dead give away when closely inspected in a loupe. This mimicry is created by coating the gem in a specific chemical dye, then blasting it with a harsh heat treatment, which forces the dye literally in the microscopic cracks and crevices within the stone. The result is a rich blend of the desired color, therefore giving the color, -and- consistent inclusions more prominent to pass off as natural emerald. If you find any larger sized emeralds, inspect it closely, as the signs can barely be seen by the naked eye if the treatment was not evenly completed.
