So...I entered a contest about creating science comics for 8-12 year old kids. They wanted 4 pages and a concept for 16 more pages and would pick the 4 best comics. The prize would have been enough to survive financially for a whole year and finally get some time for my own art and ideas instead of gradually getting a burn out from all the commission work and worrying if I'll manage to cover my costs each month.
Well,I didn't win. Of course, because why should anything I do ever work out. :|
My friend works at the institute which hosted the contest and kept me updated. My comic made the 6th place of around 90 submissions ( place 1-4 won the money ). Up to the final meeting of the jury everyone liked it, because it stood out style-wise and was the only one featuring an animal protagonist. The jury members also liked it...except for a school inspector and one art professor, who kept nagging the protagonist HAD to be a child because kids need kids to identify with and couldn't relate to an animal. Ex-fucking-cuse me??? Ever heard of „The Lion King“, „Bambi“, „My Little Pony“, etc. which don't feature any humans and still every child loves them? That's like the lamest reason ever to boycott a comic! That damn art professor managed to convince the rest of the jury that a child protagonist would be better and so they picked 4 comics which pretty much all have the same plot and styles which can be found in any average school book. Yay. Definitely worth hosting a contest for.
I was and still am rather frustrated about the decision, because all seemed to be going well, everyone liked it and I already had the whole comic planned out in my head. When I heard an art professor would be in the jury I already had a bad feeling. Thanks for ruining everything. -__-
My Mom suggested finishing the comic anyway and trying to get it funded online, but I don't have time to work on such a big project next to commissions and I doubt anyone would be interested in paying for a science comic targeted at kids. *sighs*
Anyway, hope you like these 4 pages.

Naw, I really have to question that decision. 6th out of 90 sure is good, but I think this is far too good work to just lose and be abandoned.
This is looking fantastic so far and is so promising. I can't see how kids that age couldn't enjoy this. Older or younger even!
Maybe there is a way it can be funded online anyway? Or you can find a publisher for it or an interest group to sponsor you?

Ahahaha! Couldn't relate to an animal???????? What kinds of kids have those people known that couldn't relate to animals? That's a really stupid reason to judge something, but whatever. :B Or else they have 'this isn't what the kid is, so therefore there's absolutely no way they could ever empathize and walk in different shoes!!' syndrome.
That's amazing! Although you didn't place in the tippy top you still place really high! You should be super proud, although I know it does suck. This comic is amazing and super cute <3
