MarcusStarkiller designed this Constitution-refit-variant and named it after me, and asked if I'd like to write the lore for it. So here goes!Chinook-Class light thru-deck assault carrier
Beginning in 2347, not seeing a formal truce until 2366, and not truly concluded fully until the end of the Dominion War in 2377; the Cardassian War was arguably the first major conflict since the Four Years War with the Klingon Empire in which the ethos and ideology of the United Federation of Planets would prove wanting in the face of the practicalities of an armed conflict. Most of the Federation’s then current fleet, and indeed; most of the ships in development at the time such as the Galaxy and Nebula class vessels were not built for war; since for nearly a century, the Federation could afford to rely upon either superior technology, or diplomatic skill to carry the day. Despite the gap in technological prowess however; the Cardassian Union proved that purpose-built warships would often prevail or at least hold their own against technologically superior, but impractically constructed vessels.
One result of this culmination of factors was that the line of the Federation’s border conflict would often be held by then outdated vessels; such as the Excelsior, Soyuz, Curry and Miranda classes; vessels which would again appear on the frontlines in the Borg and Dominion conflicts. Another was the creation of somewhat unorthodox vessels to close the gap; one of which was the Chinook-class light assault-carrier. The Chinook was created primarily from a limited number of decommissioned, but not fully disassembled Constitution-refit-class hulls stored at various Starfleet shipyards across the Federation. Using advances in warp-core, deflector, and general ship-board infrastructure technology since their creation, Starfleet’s shipwrites were able to compress the technology necessary to run these aged vessels into a far smaller volume; freeing up space within the ships hull. In the case of the Chinook class; this now free volume was allocated to no fewer than 4 dedicated shuttle-bays, and a thru-deck carrier deck. The resulting starship; much like those that would come with the fleet modernization efforts following Wolf 359, is somewhat short on creature comforts or science facilities; but carries a proportionally massive number of shuttles, landing craft, or fighters.
The Chinook-class was thus deployed most often as a component of a larger unit; acting as an escort-carrier able to vastly magnify the numbers of a small task force. But it was also deployed as an assault-carrier: able to carry and rapidly deploy shuttles carrying Starfleet MACO special forces to take Cardassian stations, disabled ships, or planet-side installations. They would also later take part in the early days of the Dominion war; comprising some of the forces that would take the brunt of early Federation losses before Starfleet’s new Akira-class cruisers would take up the assault-carrier role. Despite their short career, and being an unpopular assignment for career Starfleet officers; the ships became fondly thought of by the Federation pilots and marines who served aboard them; many of whom felt a degree of pride in a past ship of the line from what some viewed as the glory days of Starfleet once again carrying the Federation banner.

Yeah: the connie refit is probably up there on my all-time favorite Star Trek ship designs as well; she's still sort of the default I go to in my head for "THE Enterprise", even if the Galxy and Sovereign edge it out on the faves list slightly at times; purely for getting to see more of them as it were.
