I do have to wonder if the outcome would have been different if Noah had tried a different tact. Say, when Mort spoke to him for the first time, throwing the knife away and telling him he'd been lied to and explaining his situation.
Mort wouldn't have helped him, but he might have avoided getting eaten.
I guess it'd depend on how evil and/or hungry Mort was feeling that morning. ^.^

He's not a dragon, he's an Imperial Fire-Demon. He doesn't need to do something as clunky as breathe fire. He just makes things burn with a flick of the toe. The fire-demons have a truism, in fact: "Everything burns."
I think food bribes work pretty well, but of course you'd have to ask
to know for sure!

It isn't any sort of spoiler to say that Mort gets a large extra boost of energy from eating humans in particular. And he has EVERY reason to want to do it - he's said flat out he hates humans. Noah stepped in a very, very big pile when he decided to attack Mort, and this is the end result.
Well, I did write a couple of stories with him and Arch, and he got plenty of normal conversations with Arch. Too many, if you ask Mort!
Mort's also a solitary predator. He likes being alone. Alone is what is most natural to him. Company is weird and probably wants to kill him or challenge for his territory.

And something I've learned the hard way: I don't know everything about Mort. In researching for the stories with Lemondeer I learned a lot about him, but within the comic he quite surprises me from time to time. And to some extent, I'm molding him to my model of animal behavior, and Lem has her own ideas. Since Mort is her lifelong dream and creation, her interpretation automatically trumps mine, and it should!
TL;DR: Stay tuned. Mort has a lot of depth to him, and I'm sure as the comic continues we're going to see that depth come to the fore.

My joke is that I - ArchTeryx, the character - know all there is to know about Mort, because he told me his tales, of his mother, of his many encounters with humans, with his life. But I didn't bother telling the person behind the keyboard most of them. He, like all Lem's fans, is gonna have to find out the stories for himself.
You ought to read my stories then. While not quite as entertaining as watching Noah's imminent demise, I actually came up with a way for both Mort *and* I to win, and apparently gave him a tea habit. ^^
Got some really interesting stories from him, too (though I refused to relay all of them to my typist).

There's two short stories: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/29955709/ and https://www.furaffinity.net/view/30736634/ . In doing research for the stories, I talked extensively with
lemondeer about Mort, and a few comic-related spoilers came out. Not many, though, as my stories occur before the events of Down the Hatch and ArchTeryx never crosses paths with Noah.
did grant me a gift, though, for my efforts. She made one aspect of my stories canon: She decided that Mort liked tea, because I introduced him to it. A liquid he could drink as hot as he liked, loaded with a rich brew of flavors, and a stimulant to boot? Mort was all over that. My tea is part of what won him over... just a little bit.
It was a kindness. He wasn't used to a two-legs doing him a kindness. It worked for Androcles.
