In my opinion, the words “bachelor” and “fried” go together like bread and butter. Although my mom used to whip this up as a cheap, easy, and flavorful meal for the whole family, it has been a staple in my solo kitchen.
Ingredients:
• 1 medium to large potato
• 2 or 3 hot dogs
• salt & pepper
• lots of butter
Peel the potato and cut it into quarters length-wise. Then cut those quarters into slices approximately 3-4mm (1/8-3/16 inch) thick.
Throw enough butter into a frying pan to cook up those potato slices, then throw in some more. You can never use too much butter. Melt the butter over medium heat. When melted, add the potato slices. Cook, covered, stirring occasionally. While that’s going on, slice the hotdogs into pieces a good centimeter (1/4-3/8 inches) thick. Don’t add them to the skillet just yet.
While the potatoes are still cooking, add salt and pepper to taste. Once they’ve begun to turn golden, add the hotdog slices. Continue to cook, uncovered now, and stirring more frequently. The hotdogs will brown up pretty quickly. The meal is done when the hotdogs are turning brown and the potatoes are golden (see photos).
I like these with a dollop of ketchup, but they are great plain. I’ve never tried them this way, but they would probably be good if cooked up with a little garlic or a small sprinkle of parsley.
Serves: 1
Total prep and cook time: 20-25 minutes
