I've really wanted to do a painting related to GODZILLA VS MONSTER ZERO, a film I've really started appreciating more and more in recent days. Of course, rather than something kaiju-centric, I wanted to do something of Miss Namikawa (portrayed by the still-gorgeous-54-years-later Kumi Mizuno). I haven't painted a human figure since high school, so this was a real challenge to me, especially with the face. Truth be told, I'm kinda wanting to prepare myself some to do another self portrait. I'm not really the type to do photo-realism, but I feel I'm good at going for effect with my paintings.
Speaking of, I'm really proud with how she turned out here. Technically, her costume is supposed to be black and gray, but I wanted to try some bluish-greens and turquoises to add some flare. And while they didn't really do this for the movie, I like giving Namikawa's eyes a blank stare, with no color or gleam effect. It looks really fitting for her.
It goes without saying, but the backdrop is supposed to be the scales of the eponymous Monster Zero - King Ghidorah. Those on their own were fun to make (naturally, because I work in layers, I made them first before putting down Namikawa's silhouette, and used brown and yellow for a proper gold effect).
Also, here's a tip for any budding artists wanting to try canvas painting - always get canvases that are really nice and firm. I would say it's because I haven't really honed my "pressure sensitivity", but there are stretched canvases I've seen where they're creased on their framing from being too saggy. It's REALLY apparent on smaller ones, which is why I used a 5x7 panel canvas for this piece. Anything smaller than 8x10, I recommend panel canvases rather than the stretched ones (unless you're okay with tightening them yourself, I'm not your dad).
