I've imagined for a while what it would be like to have Asriel as a sort of character like Thanos, gathering human souls to get the power to restart the timeline back to even before he was killed. And even in this kind of setting, he wouldn't necessarily be a villain, but rather someone who sees what he's doing as the right thing.
