Its been going downhill since the "grunge era" happened in the 90s (I think it was 90s, I'm too young to be sure). Everything is just so cookie cutter the same sounding, terrible lyrics, and no creativity. Dont even get me started on modern country, I use it as my Alarm Clock in the morning since I hate it so much I have to wake up and turn it off.
I pretty much live in the 80s with music, 80's electropop, new wave, country and some rock. The only 'modern' music I'll listen to is new(ish) the 'Synthwave' genre which is an 80s New Wave/Synthpop retro inspired genre that I've really become fond of in the past few years (with this genre maybe there's some hope for modern music imo)

I think it's because with such easy to access info we never bother to remember any of it for ourselves, instead we just search it back up each time we need it time and time again.
Orrrr people have always been dumb and the connectivity of the internet just makes it more apparent since almost anyone can access it.
