Well i snapped my axle today.
What happened is as follows
I came out of my school parking lot and was turning onto Hwy 220. It had been raining all day and as i started to speed up my tires lost all traction. I started to turn into the skid but was heading for the curb on the drivers side. The truck started to skid to the right i turned into the skid and at that time my truck spin all the way around (did a 180) and hit the curb. My Driver side front tire hopped the curb with no problem and then my roarer tire hit with a loud thud killing the engine. I hit my flashers and stepped out looking at the front tire and nothing was wrong with it i then turned to the back one and say this
>.
Well needless to say after a $60 tow for a block and a half. i found that the rim is broken, axle is as the pic shows destroyed, the drum is ok and still attached to the rim, the break shield is destroyed but the break parts are ok.
the new axle is $160-180 and the other parts arent that bad but its still another expense that i really cant afford tight now

I had an old 72 Mercury for my first car: a butt ugly 2 door sedan with a 1/2 white vinyl top and a power blue (yeah... THAT ugly) paint job.
Came home from school one day, my first year at a JC (3 months out of high school) and the engine threw a rod.
I killed the car... So, though not a broken axle I know how you feel about the lack of wheels.

I know all too well of the Ranger slide. I slid across 4 lanes of interstate highway in front of a loaded dump truck, after crossing a bridge during icy conditions. I didn't hit anything except a muddy drainage ditch (which I got stuck in, no 4WD). At least you're alright and the tow fee was only $60, mine was $145 just to get pulled out of a ditch. They never actually "towed" my truck anywhere. At least my insurance covered it.
Good luck with the rebuild. Look in scrap yards, sometimes you can find cheap parts there.

OH WOW thats amazing that you didnt get hurt
thanks i got it finished the following day. We overnighted the parts all new ones all around. My bill was a little over $300. Im going to school for Auto Mech so we get a nice discount on parts from the companies like Oreilly's and Ford

I was shaken up pretty bad, but no injury. It was kinda funny tho, when I was doing the walk around to check for any damage(which was only a bent front passenger mud flap(which along with the driver's, I've taken off)), another driver on the opposite side of the highway did the same thing I did, only across one lane and he hit the guard rail. He was fine, got out of his car, checked the dented fender, kicked it, got back in and drove away.
$300 ain't bad. It helps when you can do the work yourself too.
