This is my current work area. Some people wanted to see what it's like now so I figured why not.
Here is my older setup: http://www.furaffinity.net/full/2200248/
[ The camera isn't so great this time around so the monitors look much worse than they actually are! ]
The most noticeable differences here include:
- A new monitor: my old CRT... very good for testing colors and patterns.
- The lack of the books and the light box/ book holder. I used them because the table was originally too high so I removed the wheels to make it more comfortable to type with. In doing so I made the table too low for my monitors and tablet so I compensated the height issue with the box/holder and books.
- A keyboard tray. This is what allowed me to put the wheels back on and remove a lot of the clutter. I do switch between drawing and general computing arrangements so now I have two mouse pads (the other one is in the tray) and a cordless keyboard.
- The new Cintiq tablet/ monitor [ie the third monitor]. OMG IT'S AWESOME
So there you have it, in all it's broken-in glory. I left it as is so no props this time around. Other things that are missing were simply put elsewhere if not removed entirely (like the receiver, as I no longer watch television enough to justify having one). You may notice the fact that I'm using Sai now (on the tablet). I didn't give up on photoshop. No no no... in fact, my CS4 dvd set just came in (box on the left).

I have no idea about the mid ranged ones. I don't think they even make those any more... and no warranty = no purchase for me. The only drawback to having this over the 21wx though, if you can even call it a drawback, is that you are limited to a maximum resolution of 1200x800 (which doesn't effect me at all). I say that because other than that, if you are used to using traditional tablets, you will find use in this.
That is unless you feel as if you could benefit from using a larger tablet... which is something I was never able to get used to. I stroke small so I found the larger tablets very inconvenient to work with. Although I wouldn't mind using one if it was handed to me I am very satisfied with using the 12wx. Just keep in mind that the largest cintiq is 7x4 inches larger than the smallest while only having a 400x400 pixel increase... at twice the cost. If the pixel increase was relative to the size increase then I would have chosen the 21ux one instead, but that isn't the case here. As for the mid sized ones... like I said, I have no idea. I consider them a risk.

Welp, more than anything I see it as a bargain, from the perspective of them being from a relatively earlier generation, but at the same time a lot more workspace. I felt a world of difference when I switched from my old 4x5 graphire to my current 9x12 intuos , so while a 12 inch cintiq is in between the two sizes, I'm not sure if this would affect the way I work considering in this case you get to see what you're doing on the device itself.
Used 17 inchers in good condition are roughly at the same price as a new 12wx, sometimes even cheaper. From your user experience, would you say it's more convenient to get a larger one? (not considering warranty here).

Oh yeah, the difference is huge. Even moving from a 4x5 graphire to a 6x10 (or whatever the aspect is) intuos made a big difference to me. The 12 inch tablet I have (non wacom, I forgot the name, I think Aiptek) was too big for me, but the intuos was just right. But the thing is that I still get to work in 1920x1200 workspace regardless of what tablet I was using. When using a cintiq you have between 1200x800 to 1600x1200 to work with which is a 400x400 difference in resolution between the smallest and the largest. Although you can almost double the surface area the actual work space on the computer is only slightly increased... while forcing you to produce broader strokes to get the same results. With that said, best case scenario for me would be the same size but with a 1920x1200 resolution instead of 1200x800! Anything bigger than a 6x10 surface area and it becomes a burden for me to work with. Like I said I make very small strokes so an increase in surface area would mean an increase of work relative to the size difference... making it harder for me to draw if I where to try and force myself to take full advantage of the size.
You may very well find it to be a different experience than I would though. These are just my views on the matter. Depending on the combination between the size and technical specifications I may have opted for one of the mid sized ones.. but I would definitely not have went with the 21incher.

Im using an hybrid.
I've got a old style 15 inch on a 21x Stand. I actually really like it. I can put weight into it and it doesnt hog my desk space. Beware my max size is 1024x768 but i'm totally cool with it. I use the cintiq for pure ink\stroke\animation work and to break up my posture.

Yeah.. it produces a good amount of heat. It can warm up THE ENTIRE FLOOR when I keep the door open long enough. That's only when I'm using everything at once. The two extra monitors are optional so I am now turning them off when they aren't specifically being used. As for other things, like the reciever, TV, players, and consoles I used to keep in this room... they where moved to other rooms. This and the lighting are the only sources of heat now, so it actually isn't that bad any more.
Yes and no. It has a profound effect on the way I breathe (and in turn, sleep) but it's not because of an illness. It's because of a physical condition (thick irritable skin) made much worse by my mild allergies.... both being conditions I barely noticed until about three years ago when it started getting oh so much worse.
sounds bad. i have the problem with my "Asthma bronchiale" it only appears on my allergic days of the year or when i stress my body with exercise. so i must drink a special cough mixture to stop cramping my breathing muscle and get lost of the slime(sounds like it is"disgusting")
Although I should have used these cable ties by now I haven't yet because I still haven't decided whether or not having a 5.1 speaker system is worth it. On the one hand it is awesome for watching movies and playing games.. but on the other hand I barely use it. It produces 10 extra cables (computer plugs, power, switch, and the speakers themselves) and that may very well be the reason why I remove it.
I have also been working a lot on my computer recently (new case for example) so it's pretty messy right now. I usually have it tied up and following one of the legs of the table though.

Your reference IBM there looks like the little sibling to the IBM I'm typing this on :3
Mine is kind of worn out though, which is odd when I think about it because the Sun branded trinitron to it's left is a good 4 years older and looks flawless in comparison.
Cool setup though, looks less cramped than mine.
