Also, my father served in the Navy. He was the guy who turned on the nuclear reactors that powered the gigantic aircreft carriers when they still uses those models. Now they're the diesel motor ones that are much more ffective but more fuel hogs. He also had a shift running the on board desalination plants. He broke his foot playing football and was reassigned to teach the reactor class.
His only time he ever was allowed to make code was a disaster too. Thick black sludge with chunks he describes it at. His CO loved it though, after that nobody let him near the machine though!
