In celebration of the new pokemon reveal, I decided to doodle up these cute new starters as gijinkas just for fun, but I thought it'd be a shame for them to sit on my computer and do nothing, so I'm offering them to you guys~!
What I'm Looking For
+ No money offers! I don't want cash for these kids.
+ Adopts!
+ Art of my characters! Toyhouse link here!
Rules
+ Please note me if you're interested in claiming one of these adopts~!
+ There's only three of them, so I might not take an offer right away! They'll be available for 5 days, after which I will choose the best offer if I haven't already chosen an offer.
+ You'll get a transparent image of the adopt if I choose you! In regards to art trades, you'll get the adopt only after the art is completed! A time limit will be determined upon accepting the offer and if you don't fulfill your end of the trade, the adopt will go back up! Fair is fair, right?
+ Once you have the adopt, they're yours to do as you like with! Just try to remember to credit me if you post the design anywhere, okay? :) Thanks!

It's not in this context. You must understand the optics of that decision. There's a pretty strong pattern of racism relating Black people to monkeys and apes, so to default the monkey Pokemon to have dark skin is pretty on-the-nose in that regard, and not in a particularly reaching way. The face paint and ear-gauges are also questionable in this context as well. There's obviously no crime in swatching colors, but you would have done better to give this character a different skin tone and to have incorporated the brown into the outfit instead.
Kudos for diversity in your character designs, though. Sobble and Scorbunny are really impressive interpretations of the characters (especially the bandaid on Scor's nose. Wow). But, this particular creative decision for Grookie is one that should be avoided at all costs. You're the artist, of course, but I'd seriously recommend revisiting that design, even if the optics aren't actually what you intended.

I think I understand what you mean when you look at it that way. I certainly didn't intend for it to read in that manner, and I certainly didn't mean for it to be offensive, but I'll take what you've said into consideration. Everyone else I've shown Grookey too has loved him, so I didn't even realize it was an issue to be completely honest! I'll look into changing his skin tone, though, since that'd be an easy enough fix in the main file! Do you think if I change the skin tone I have to remove the markings as well? I like them as a little nod to the pokemon's facial patterns, but I don't know if they'll still work on a different tone. What do you think?
You're pretty awesome- thanks for understanding. I don't have telegram these days, but I have discord. Otherwise, notes are cool too :). As for the markings, they do make sense as to what they're alluding to, but no idea how well they'd appear in a revision. This gijinka definitely seems like an outdoorsy/explorer type, so maybe goggles, glasses? Or a scarf or face mask. In any case, if your designs are any indication, I'm certain you can come up with a better idea than me haha.
Just to say, your Grookey interpretation isn't without its own merit. Overall, it's a very concise design and conveys a single, cohesive theme really well. And- again, I don't mean to diminish your use of diversity across all three designs, as that is something I love to see and hope to see more of (from every artist I happen upon, haha). And I hope I haven't discouraged you from including poc in your artwork going forward :).
