Since there was some interest in what a pickle vat car was in my last picture heres a close-up. Basically the way pickles used to be transported was that railroads owned flatcars carrying large banded wooden tanks like this picturesd. The tanks were filled with vinegar to keep the product preserved and pickles were loaded in the mix for transport.
An extreme few of these survived. Obviously since reefer cars were invented early and made these obsolete way before preservation was popular. This one is the only one I've ever seen mention of in fact.
