It is completely different :)
I am an academic teacher, and one of the courses I teach is mesh modeling in Blender (mostly reverse engineering from 3d scans, also other stuff for 3d printing).
It took me some time to re-learn the gui in 2.8, but it was worth it - the new gui is way more intuitive, especially for new users, so teaching is easier.
The real time rendering in 2.8 using Eevee renderer is amazing, especially with ambient occlusion, shadows, screen space reflection and refraction.
Also, the way you did the hair is perfect :)

Thanks :) The hair/feathers are a mesh that I made with curves. and to animate them, I put em in a lattice which I made into a soft body. It's not perfect in every situation but it works rather nicely for an easy solution.
Eevee does look a lot better than Cycles. Does 2.8 take blend files from earlier versions? I might play with this in it if so.
And that's super cool that you teach this stuff. ^^ It'd be nice to take a class on 3d work I think. I've been out of school for a while though and modelling was never offered when I was there.

Successful is right, this is sweet for such an early knowledge! Last question I'm just wondering are there any specific tutorials you used that helped you make this animation? I'm wondering cuz I've been planning on doing some Blender soon and was trying to compile a list of good tutorials to use
It's all been concepts I've gathered over years of teaching myself how to do things. But here's a couple that were helpful for this specifically.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZaqVcyJkMw This video showed me how to make the hair move without turning all the complex shapes into a cpu heavy soft body.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysB3FMZLjFI This entire series has been my main source of information over the years. The blender version is older but alot of the concepts are still applicable. This video in particular is about using shape keys to mix and match facial expressions.
