oh. yeah, that is an allusion to the langolears, if I'm not entirely mistaken. Stephen King "monster thing" that eats yesterday after it's gone. psychic people detect their coming initially as a scratching sort of sound inside their head. as they grow closer, it becomes louder, harsher, more tearing and grinding. At least, that's what I thought of when I read it.
