One of the centerpieces of the California Academy of Sciences is Claude, a rare albino American Alligator born in 1995 and moved to the aquarium in 2008. In the pre-restored academy there was a large congregation of alligators. The new exhibit originally started out with a small group, as well as Claude. However besides a lack of melanin albinism is also linked to vision problems, so one day Claude clambered onto a rock favored by a large female (named Bonnie). The female didn't take too kindly to Claude's intrusion, and so bit him, requiring the amputation of one of his toes. Subsequently, Claude is the only alligator left in the exhibit.
