It's kind of new for me.
Yes and no, it's when I want to do 3D but am not able to (on train, watching TV etc.)
I've also seen modelers doodle on reference photos to find lines in the body (to lay their topology along)
I don't think it's too hard if you already think of people in ... slightly facetious volumes. Shading planes.
