I wouldn't call her handsome, myself; she's definitely feminine. "Unconventionally beautiful" would make sense, even though I hate the term: whenever I see a woman that I consider jaw-droppingly gorgeous, other men call her "unconventionally beautiful" -- thanks, guys; thanks a lot. ;)
As for your question, Ruth Rendell writes detective novels in Britain, using her own name and a pseudonym, Barbara Vine. I've not read her work, but she is quite popular.
