Abyss-Class Stealth Cruiser
Nicknamed the “Shadow Star Destroyer” by the Rebel Alliance, the Abyss-Class Stealth Cruiser was one of the Galactic Empire’s numerous secret projects undertaken during the Galactic Civil War. More specifically; it was a jointly commissioned project between the Imperial Navy and Imperial Intelligence, and explored the rarely explored field of stealth starship design. So-called cloaking devices had been experimented with since the days of the Old Republic; but most if not all were reliant upon rare Stygium crystals to operate, and had an exponentially greater power consumption for the volume of vessel hidden. While these problems could be worked around; one unsurmountable one was the fact that such devices would render the ship itself blind to the galaxy around it, as well as invisible, a fact which made their use dangerous as well as impractical.
Faced with this design challenge; the finest minds at Kuat Drive Yards proposed a radical solution; that of abandoning the concept of a cloaking device entirely. Consequently; the 2,100-meter-long Abyss-Class presents a striking and unusual external appearance when placed alongside other Imperial warships, this is a result of the ships stealth cladding. Using specially designed sheets of sensor-scattering and reflective composite armor, and a powerful ship-wide refrigeration system; the Abyss-Class’ exterior both refracts enemy sensors, and hides its own emissions; reducing the ships effective sensor profile to nearly indistinguishable from background radiation outside of visual range. Combined with four state of the art KDY Aurora-II hyper-cooled sub-light engines, purpose-built for her, the Abyss-Class is capable of cruising at nominal STL velocities for extended periods, all but invisible to conventional sensors.
The Abyss-Class runs relatively lightly armed when placed against other Imperial Navy vessels of her size; this is due to the fact that in order to maintain her stealth profile, almost all of her external weapons blisters are retracted into her hull and covered with retractable slats of refrigerated armor when not in use. These include four batteries of quad-mount heavy turbo-laser cannon turrets on her dorsal hull, two batteries of heavy ion cannon turrets on her ventral hull, and twelve blisters of heavy laser cannon turrets, providing a nearly full-coverage point-defense grid when fully deployed. While the standard Abyssal-Class carries no torpedo or missile batteries, she does carry an arsenal of orbital mines, which can be used to covertly deny a planet’s orbit to hostile capital ships.
Despite her size and advanced stealth systems; the lack of some of the more heavy weaponry and equipment of her design brethren makes the Abyss-Class faster and more agile than an Imperial or Victory-class Star Destroyer. With her sub-light engines at full power, and without the concern for stealth, it is theorized that an Abyss-class cruiser could even rival Corellian CR-90 Blockade-Runners for speed. This is partially due to the ships proportionally massive power reserves; provided by a custom-built Seinar-Fleet-Systems I-H40 Hyper-matter reactor. This proportionally massive power reserve also acts to power the ships hull refrigeration plant, and her three internally mounted deflector shield generators. These, combined with an extensive sensor and communications jamming suite provide the bulk of the ship’s defenses; since extensive damage to the hull would severely compromise her stealth capabilities.
The Abyss-Class’ embarked compliment of embarked craft is tailored perfectly to her mission profile. This includes eight Lambda-Class shuttlecraft, and sixteen Imperial Dropship Transports; both of which have been modified with similar stealth profile technology. Her compliment of TIE fighters has been entirely replaced, with six squadrons of TIE/PH Phantom Stealth Fighters, and two squadrons of TIE/EW Electronic Warfare Fighters, with room for up to two additional squadrons of mission-specific craft. Like her weapons; the Abyss-Class’ dorsal and ventral hangar bays are hidden behind retractable doors when not in use, by this same token however; she lacks the secondary hangars that many larger Imperial Navy capital ships possess. This formidable pool of embarked craft serve to both deliver and support the ships compliment of elite Storm Commandos and Dark Troopers.
Due to the zealously guarded secrecy of Imperial Intelligence, it is not clear precisely how many Abyss-Class vessels were commissioned, or even reached completion. What is unarguable however is that, had they come sooner, they could have given the Tarkin Doctrine’s dedication to fear-based tactics a whole new and very much truly lethal edge. The prospect of both the Imperial Navy, and Imperial Intelligence being able to strike from the black of the void without warning, and vanish just as quickly is a terrifying one for any would-be insurrectionist to contemplate.
Bit lacking in detail unfortunately; sort of a combination of flash, the nature of the design and the scale trying to get all that info in there as well... also; not quite happy with the front-on proportions of the command tower. I like the side profile; but the front came out a bit spindly-looking. Was going for a sort of "cobra's hood" look but that didn't quite come through I don't think.

Hehe; thanks a lot Lig: probably still needs some design tweaks here: but yeah, as said above: sort of inspired by the Amun Ra-class ships from The Expanse... with a bit of a hint of the F-117 in terms of how I got the engines to fit into an all-angular design without just abandoning the Star Wars design aesthetic.
Thanks a lot; yeah, agreed on the cloaking tech: something which makes Star Wars rather interesting next to say Star Trek. Takinga bit of inspiration from Mas Effect's Normandy-class ships and The Expanse's Amun-Ra-class ships as far as her look and the tech behind her. And thanks; sort of envisioned her as basically an "assassin" of space combat as it were: sort of a glass-cannon compared to other ships of her size in the Star Wars universe which tend to brawl with one another galleon-style.
Very true, and that always bugged me... they have the tech, ship killers shouldn't be difficult. Just make an XL torpedo designed to burrow into the hull plating and explode inside; would be a lot more effective then just gnawing away at armor slowly.
Very fun idea; I'd consider it like a Spear or arrow from a sniper, just appears, kills, and disappears into the night.
TO be fair: the "Galleon-style" tactics do make some degree of sense for the universe, in the same way they do in the 40K universe. Torpedoes of that sort would only be effective after battering down a ships shields for instance: and we do see that torpedo bombers are the most effective strike-craft in that instance... or rather; we did back in the EU before Disney-wars shat all over what little logic existed in the space-fantasy world of Star Wars.
And agreed: that's more or less how I imagined this ship working.
