I was pretty excited when I heard the bus was having a delay. Yeah yeah, most people hate them for good reason, I definitely do usually since that’s usually less time I get to enjoy at cons or the mountains, but when Jerry and I were preparing to move thousands of miles to school, it gave that much needed extra hour to enjoy with my folks. Ma and Pa were up way before us with a big ol breakfast feast that really help make the morning less of a goodbye and more of an exciting day. The drive was as exhilarating as it was nerve wracking thinking about how the night before was the last night me and Jerry would spend in our room, but when I thought more about where we were going then I’d get excited all over again, and Jerry too seemed to be eager in his own mischievous way.
Ma and Pa both escort us as we scouted for somewhere to wait out the time. The giant rabbit easily carries both an armful of fast food and his coffee and our luggage in the other. The independent rabbit only let Ma and Pa help with a few since they somehow were more stubborn than him today, I still giggled at their brief bicker that Ma won when she threatened to not send Café giftcards while we were away.
Amidst the clamor of the station we found ourselves big enough bend to sit on. I go to make sure I have decent phone batter, but I realized to late that I was sitting right next to a pillar before Jerry plops down next to me and squeezes me against it
“Finally good to sit again” He coyly reclines against me with a husky sigh, Ma smacks the lug’s arm, and of course only getting a smirking chuckle back
I manage to wheeze out “You hate sitting, I don’t even know how I convinced you into a 4 day bus trip” I grunt and shove back at his tubby side, he just scoots closer
“Well after jokes about how my weight would take down a plane you were all dreamy eyed about sight-seeing the landscapes and cities. You should be an architect instead”
“psh, ‘dreamy eyed’” I scoffed, but it was kind of hard to deny that when I did have my sketchbook ready and already filled with in-town scenery “you know I had you when I pointed out the good food stop-
“Shuddup” Jerry grumbles, I proudly sip some water
“Sou boys better not go on shopping sprees on the way, that’s your food budget for the month” Ma warned, Jerry calls the bluff with a smirk
“Plus, you’ll need to save for the parties,” Pa adds “I hear the clubs are pretty exotic where you’re at” I snort out water, coughing up laughs when Ma gave him the stink eye
“Ooooooh you know it; our dorms gonna be lit when we bring some dancers back” Jerry
“Boy’s, don’t you dare” Ma glared at us next. Me and Jerry just exchanged a snicker
“ah right right, you guys do LAN parties and other nerd things, don’t you?”
“Lan?! Wow you’re old” I retort
“I’ll have you know checkers was hip in my time, get your trends right” Jerry and I just groan at how Pa just deflected and did dad things
“Well now you look like in the time of your life for some bingo and golf” Jerry bobs his head, I roll back with laughter and give a high five. Pa gets all grumbly of course, probably still indignified he lost a wrestling game to a 4th grader rabbit when Jerry was already his height.
“be glad Jerry’s got your back right now, but I think he’s getting back at you for me” Pa retorts, Jerry presses me to the pillar more, earing brownie points from Pa while Ma probably was scowling them.
“Oh my gosh I’m gonna die before I get to try the Cherryville pretzels” I manage a wheeze between the lug and the stone, but finally he let’s up. I’m greeted with an aggressive giant head-ruffle. He briefly gets up to reload on fries, I retreat next to Ma and away from being pinned. Jerry’s back with another batch and already clearing them with big pawfuls.
“nah, I still need someone to do my homework there” Jerry chuckles as he settled down again.
“pffft, yeah right, plus you’re not even gonna have much with your kind of curriculum” I enviously remark.
“Should’a done footbaaall; still not to late to put some meat on you” Giant rabbit paws squeeze my limpy biceps
“Nah, I’m good, I’d just get rag-dolled by your peers” I decline the brutish lifestyle
“No they wouldn’t; I’m the only one who gets to kick your butt”
“You ass” I roll my eyes at the boastful rabbit Jerry ruffles my head, I bat the big paw away. He goes to dig into one of his bags more, but upon combing through each one he gives a grimace. looks like he ran out of fries. I thought he’d get up so I can have breathing room again, but either one of the otherworldly creatures had stumbled into his bag or he was in some deep thought.
“hm, kind of wished I saved some of their food” Jerry mused quietly. I glance up, I figured he meant mom’s food because I was already missing it. The pancakes were extra good this morning though, and the last for a little while.
“Yep, I’m definitely gonna miss their cooking too” I shared the glum thought “at least the first ones will be amazing whenever break comes around”
“I still remember how offended Jerry was when we made him the zucchini soup while you got steak; oh was that look priceless.” Ma sighs with an embarrassed grin over that first night we had him over, what a way to meet the folks.
“You both freaked out and rushed him to the doctors when you found out he stole my steak” I snickered, and then flashed Jerry a grimace for the thievery. Pa too laughs at how they hauled off the not-so-herbivore to a clinic, only to find out it was fine for him to have meat, to their relief.
“Well at least from there your Mom only had to cook 1 thing whenever you came over, jerry” Pa reminisced
“except you kept spoiling them with pizza” Ma unamusingly reminded
“He grew faster than we could feed him” He retorted. Jerry snapped out of thought, he proudly grins for a moment.
“I’ll make sure he studies cooking videos on the ride, if he doesn’t eat the phone watching that is.” I flash up a smirk at him, but oddly there were no usual head ruffles or arm punches. It wasn’t entirely unusual for Jerry to be sarcastic, but the lack of aggressive follow up was enough of a flag.
Even with the thunderous echoes of hooves and chatter, hisses of distant air breaks, and his idle last banter with his parents, he couldn’t help but feel a silence. The big guy still was looking and seemingly actively listening, but I knew he wasn’t entirely there, and eventually he just shifted to looking at the patterns on the wall I guess in thought. Had Jerry said anything the last half hour?
I give a lil nudge. I didn’t feel him looking down, so I just kept on playing it cool. Yeah, I knew he wasn’t entirely looking forward to the departure, but I gave him his space, I just had to let him know he wasn’t alone; though like that’s ever the feeling we have with each other. But still, the big lug was hardly an open book.
“Ah, just don’t forget to call us and let us know how the trip goes, and if you all need more money” I roll my eyes at ma with a grin, typical mother of course. Jerry looks over to her with a few nods. Her and would definitely go for a hug if Jerry would let them, but knowing how he was about anything saccharine they always gave him space, never hurt because they knew he appreciated them wholeheartedly in his own way.
A loud hiss of breaks and a breeze at my fur make me look back. The once vacant bus parking stoof a behemoth of a vehicle right beneath the sign with our destination.
The doors parted; and the line The line rises.
My ears perk, resentful and eager banter resonates as the mob narrows out into a line. There were no other people to get off the bus with it being a backup bus, and thus our time seemed to be up. I stood up, just to make sure it wasn’t, but yeah, it definitely was when the line of people collectively started boarding with relief to be on their way. Ah this was gonna be hard.
“Lemme help with those” Pa offered warmly, For once Jerry didn’t decline, his mind was elsewhere
I looked back. Geez, there was no preparing for the gut-wrenching tug at my heart strings; I could feel my eyes mirroring those bittersweet smiles and tears of my parents. Even then I had thought they were gonna have the harder time parting way, but I reeeeaaly just wanted to get another hour or few. I just fell into the hug, both held me together as I hugged them even harder
“Aw, Ma, Pa” I sniffle and smile widely into them
“We know we know, you both will be back; just, oh you know” Mom laughs; I laugh with her while pa pats my back, probably getting her sleeve wet now. Their tight hug said what I already knew that their family wasn’t going to fall apart from distance.
I collect myself after a few more sniffly laughs. Most of the bus is filling out already, good thing I reserved seats, so Jerry didn’t have to bounce people. Though speaking of which, Jerry was just not moving an inch, looking very intently upwards; I couldn’t even tell what was on his face from down here, but his fists were balled up really good. I looked back at the bus and my folks, hesitantly tug at his shirt.
“Um, don’t you wanna- “ the big guy just turned away, I flinched back. And suddenly luggage dropped and both my parents were in the air in the biggest hug I ever beheld. Those arms had tossed, crushed, and all that spelled mischievous roughness; But I had not seen him show any sort of deep affection in 13 years, and yet now the big lug was holding Ma and Pa so dearly as they awed over his clinging and hugged him back, just being there for him right now. I don’t think even the elephants could pry him away. I just smiled widely like a doof at the sight, feeling my eyes water up again. I really underestimated what our family meant to him, and sometimes I really believed that tough attitude of his.
The big lug just kept his eyes shut, but he probably could feel their smiles as ma sniffed and smiled and Pa reassuringly petted the big guy. As sad ma was to let us both go, she is laughing a few sniffles and reassured him,
“Aw, Jerry; we love you too. You’ll always be family and we’re gonna be so happy to see you both again later and have more pizza and lasagna nights; and we know everything will be alright because you’ll be there with Paul”
And then his tears fell
