In the original concept of the story, this scene was going to be where Kathy decides she does in fact like the Lieutenant, and Fred was going to realize that if he lost her, his life would not be worth living (principally because the Duchess and his mother would both kill him. Taking turns.)
Of course, that was when the story was only supposed to run for a few months.

The previous page and this one have been two my very favorite in the whole strip. His dedication to saving her, regardless of the ultimate reason, balances out all the little irritable quirks of his personality. He's decisive, capable and willing to do what must be done. Cathy, while unwillingly playing the role of victim, goes through a series of weightless poses that show you have a firm grasp of anthro physiology. Your talking animals look right, not cartoony (well, almost never cartoony except when a laugh benefits from it) and they don't spend all their time side-on or face-on to their audience.
I had grown to really like your work by this point in the comic. These two pages pushed my appreciation into 'adoration' territory.
Please, carry on with Carry On good lady. I will never tire of it so long as you don't either.

Yeah--this was actually inspired by a half-joking suggestion from a friend of mine, Bill Redfern, who said that Fred ought to have "great big anime eyes" behind the glasses. It was a running gag that Fred never took off his glasses; I had intended to give him cute little beady shoebutton eyes, but after I thought about Bill's suggestion, giving him large, expressive, gold-green eyes with thick fringes of lashes just seemed RIGHT.
Drawing that, however...you may not be able to tell from the published image, but his damned eyes came out lopsided, and I had to do a lot of fixing-it-in-Photoshop to get them the same size and relatively level.
Of course, being slightly cross-eyed kind of suggests why he needs glasses...
