Thrymja's world differs from our own somewhat in that quantum computation arrived in early 2005 and revolutionised scientific research pretty much overnight. Perhaps no area was more impacted than genetic research; the excess in processing power allowing for genomes to be mapped in hours as opposed to months, and by 2008 even allowed the simulation of what impact editing would have.

Enter Hudson Laboratories. Previously an exotic disease research institute at Porton Down UK, they had made a killing on the new technology that allowed them to create tailor-made phages. Little short of a panacea, but in many ways a victim of their own success. With big pharma going the way of the dodo they needed new lines of revenue, and so turned to the creation of exotic cosmetics and designer pets.

It was only a matter of time until some mad fucker decided to take a crack at dinosaurs. Saurian genetic material had been recovered before, but always jumbled and degraded past the point of use. With this new technology it was possible to rebuild it, inserting a few lines of code from modern avians to aid in such trivialities as respiring in a modern atmosphere, and voila! Baby murder turkeys.
