When my dad and I were putting up hay, he would drive the tractor and I would put the bales on the wagon, walking back and forth the length of the field and hoisting 40-lb squares up to chest height, then scrambling up on the moving wagon to stack them, eighty to a wagon load.
When I suggested I drive a while and he load, he told me that driving the tractor was very exacting work, that he had to be on constant alert for holes and obstacles, to keep the baler pickling up the windrows properly, to watch for jams and so on in the baler...
After he died, I had to do the haying by myself. And that was when I realized he'd been putting me on for all those years--cutting, raking, and baling hay was the EASY part! It was the walking, lifting, and stacking that was HARD!
