I wanted to draw Mikey and Roger interacting, so I depicted how things were between them when they met. Roger was a Freshman, newly independent and eager to start the college lifestyle, living away from his parents for the first time... and of course, ready to hit the dating scene. Then there's Mikey, who's a Junior, well-experienced in the trials and horrors that DeMontfort University has to offer, as well as one of the only two remaining members of the original "Class Menagerie" cast still living at Ritcher Hall (Dani is the only other one, still acting as the R.A.).
And wouldn't you know, that the openly bisexual GSD would wind up being roommates with the closeted kangaroo. And naturally, Roger found his new roomie to be quite desirable...

Oh yes. His dad was in the military - matter of fact, his father's whole side of the family is in the military. Roger's mother, however, isn't. She's a wealthy heiress, though you wouldn't know it, given the lifestyle she and her husband lead. You'd guess they were comfortably upper middle class, but that's because they didn't want Roger to grow up spoiled.
Roger grew up with a lot of creature comforts (usually they got to live in a big house with A/C and a pool, not to mention suite-bathrooms), but he also had a whole bunch of chores to do: mowing the lawn, cleaning his own bathroom, doing his own laundry, taking out the garbage, taking turns scrubbing the floor, doing the dishes, weeding the garden, etc. His parents wanted him to have a good work ethic, and to be responsible and independent. Plus he also had to get good grades (they were perfectly satisfied if he got a B, which is what he mostly got anyway, although he got an occasional A or C) and try out for sports (though he never lasted long on any team - not because he wasn't any good, but because he just wasn't competitive enough).
Roger also took martial art classes (and even learned a few nerve attacks from his ex-soldier grandpa), swim classes, art classes, dance classes, gymnastic classes, singing classes, etc. And because his family moved around so much, he only went to public school part time. The rest of the time, he was homeschooled or tutored, depending the subject. He and his mom would go to a lot of museums together. He also went to shooting galleries with his dad and grandpa.
The family even went to Japan for a year, so Roger can also speak Japanese (though not quite fluently).

Yup. I always knew Roger would be a multi-talented and naturally gifted person, though at the same time, he's kind've a "jack of all trades." He exceeds in some areas like singing, dancing, martial arts and the like, but in several other areas, he's mostly just "average." But I figured him having so many different interests would help Mikey take an interest in him (there was a strip where Mikey did seem to finally reciprocate Lisa's attraction when he got the impression that she, an English major, was also into science; that seemed to me that Mikey had a type).
