Starting off the New Year with my second piece of "The Class Menagerie" fanart, this time depicting a love-triangle that never came to be, yet held the potential to be one of more intriguing plotlines the series had to offer.

In one of the final storylines, "Duet To Me", Mikey Hopkins came out as gay... and that detail was never followed up. Which disappointed a lot of fans (or so that was my impression), though it did give way to Mikey getting paired with quite a few male OCs. Yet I have never seen or heard anybody talking about two certain side-characters who were, if you think about it, very important to Mikey's story.

The first was a panther named Tim, for whom Mikey was strongly hinted to be attracted to: http://www.theclassm.com/d/20050422.html

The second was a hyena named Wally, who was revealed to be attracted to Mikey: http://www.theclassm.com/d/20050429.html

It seemed like such a waste that nothing ever came of this scenario. For the first time ever, Mikey had a crush on someone. And not only that, but someone with a compatible orientation had a crush on Mikey. Yet neither the kangaroo or Wally had the guts to go after what they wanted.

So I decided... why not have a situation where Mikey gets an opportunity to "take a chance"?



I was actually thinking about having this happen in my Mikey/Roger fanfic, where Roger has gathered a few friends/dormmates for a game of Truth or Dare, and ends up daring Mikey to "kiss the handsomest guy in the room... and MEAN it!"

At first, Mikey won't do it... but then changes his mind, and walks in the direction of Wally, who can't help but squirm gleefully inside, thinking, "He thinks I'm the handsomest! He thinks I'm the handsomest! He thinks- HE'S GONNA KISS-"

Only for the kangaroo to walk right past him, take Tim in his arms and give him the kiss he's secretly wanted to give him for a long time.

Poor Wally's heart breaks - but there's also the added pain that he's discovered that his crush finds his best friend more attractive (it never stated whether Wally and Tim were besties, but their behavior kinda suggested it; plus it makes for a more interesting story if they are ;)). Of course, Tim isn't enjoying himself either, since he's straight (supposedly; it seems pretty implied) and knows Wally has the hots for Mikey.

So, all in all, not a good situation for any of them to be in...

...but on the plus side, at least they all know where they stand with one another, more or less. They won't have to look back on this time of their lives as a missed opportunity...
