Interceptor pilots were to fire their missiles at the invading bombers. Then as a last ditch, point their jet at a bomber and eject at the last moment. Even if they survived, the pilot would likely be deafened and blinded by the atomic explosions and suffer a broken leg upon landing. So most opted to ram the invading bomber anyway, if it came to that.
