Is Mary done entirely as a silhouette effect or did the scan drop out some highlights?

There are a couple of highlights there that you can't see, but for the most part, I was playing with black space. Yum.

Negative space is a great thing to play with. I see a tremendous lot of people around who go to color without much study of b&w ink and who draw characters in dark settings with shadows that are just slight deepening of color...They never fade to black no matter how sharp the other lighting 'says' they should be. Makes everything look pastel-ish and unfinished to my eye.

On this piece the effect lends a great deal of mystery to the character and really forces the contrast with her partner.

Yes, I agree. I like to do pastel-ish things from time to time, but I like the richness that dark colors and black brings to a picture. :D

It looks very protective, yet very loving at the same time. The darker Cougar looks just awesome in that color.
