Ellie seems to have gotten in with the wrong kind of people. Whether she took a wrong turn into some dark parallel universe, or was just that desperate is unclear.
What matters now is that she's been forcibly turned into a pair of socks by the ruthless loan shark, Rosie. Ellie tried to explain that she'd have the bells soon, that it was only a few anyway, but Rosie was having none of it at all. An example had to be made.
Now Ellie is stuck like this for the rest of her days, a warning to anyone else who thinks about not paying Rosie her dues.
