Someone pointed out that when you're a trickster, nobody trusts you, even when you're on the level.
Sandy has taken on most of the crazier aspects of Kathy's original personality. In this story, Kathy needs to be more level-headed in order to be the Hero, so Sandy can be the comic foil. And in the original version of the story, Kathy was not going to like Fred, so much of that hostility has also been transferred to Sandy's relationship with Fred.
