I worked a little more on Kinchloe's "look" after checking out some images of coyotes here on FA. They're not quite wolves, not quite dogs, not quite foxes...I hope I got this to look better.

Coyotes fill the same niche in North American ecology that the Jackals fill in Africa. Some parallel evolution is to be expected, but while 'yotes are the same species as Dogs and Wolves, the Jackals really aren't part of the Wolf family -- kind of a distant cousin, like the Dhole or the African Wild Dog.
America did have Hyenas millions of years ago: really big ones (we're talking Murphy, here). The Pronghorn Antelope evolved to outrun them, a predator who probably went extinct because its fast food was too fast.
