On January 26, 2019, the B-29 Superfortress known as Doc moved into a new hangar and education center in Wichita, Kansas. I was thrilled to be on hand and got some nice photos.
The B-29 Superfortress was powered by four of these radial piston engines. 18 cylinders configured in two rows of nine produced 2200 horsepower. Later variants produced up to 4000 horsepower.

These were fitted with two compound turbines that also drove crankshaft as well as the blower sections. The compound turbines added 450 hp to the engines power. One of the nightmares of the engines were the high combustion and exhaust temp, so they were not a long life engine. 500 to 1000 was about the norm before rebuild. For their day they were a high strung engine.
Two pilots that I know talked about flying with them and most of the time they backed way off the power to get the life out of the engines. If they could they would drop back to 60% power this would slow them down about 15 mph and extend the range by about 60% I think it was.
