Tazna fired off his steam rifle, getting behind the cement roadblock quickly after he did so. It seemed like the whole city was up in arms against them. But intel told them it was just one gang. It seemed to be one very LARGE gang, then, the tiger thought.
He heard someone shout. “OH MY GOD!! IT’S AN ARMORED CAR!!!” Tazna froze. An armored car? Shit, they were dead now. He peeked out to see the dreaded vehicle lumbering into the intersection, turning to face the police blockade. He turned off his scope’s automatic sights; he needed to aim manually if he had any chance at this.
He looked down the barrel, lining the crosshairs up with a tiny chink in the engine housing. As the car headed his way, he fired.
At first, nothing happened. Taz hung his head, taking a moment before aiming for his next shot.
FWABOOM!!!
He fell backwards, luckily still behind the barrier. The car had exploded, killing anyone nearby. It had caused some collateral damage, but nothing too bad. He was reloading, when suddenly something exploded near him, sending him rocketing into a hole in a nearby building. He blacked out.
He woke up to a panther with a bionic arm standing over him. There was some sort of gun attached to his fist, and he fired it with deadly accuracy. In his left hand he held a steam rifle, firing off rounds in quick succession, the recoil barely jolting his arm.
Tazna’s own rifle lay near him, broken in two. The only usable part left was the steam capsule, and that was only useful as a suicide bomb.
The panther looked down at him, then tossed him the rifle he held. “Shoot.”
The tiger obeyed, taking aim and firing. He shot off four rounds quickly, then reloaded it using one of the capsules marked with an ‘E’ in the stock. Electricity, energy, or explosive. He didn’t really care which at the moment.
“Shit,” the panther spat, “they got some power armor.” The panther quickly tapped a button on the bionic part of his head with his left paw.
Tazna took aim at the new targets, who apparently had power armor. He fired off a round. When it hit, great, gushing bouts of electricity burst from the impact point, short-circuiting the armor and most likely killing the owner. The gang members near him were caught in the blast as well.
The tiger caught his breath as another armored car rolled into view. Another one?! He thought. They couldn’t take that.
The panther seemed to sense that their numbers were too thin. He pressed another button on his head. “Sisters Thirteen, come in, this is Alpha T-07. Come in, Sisters Thirteen.”
Taz caught his breath. The Sisters Thirteen?! Who was this panther, who could call on such power? The Sisters were an elite sect of the military, devoted to purging anything that was evil. Contact with them was forbidden under normal circumstances; they were too dangerous.
“Sister X-27D, reading you, Alpha T-07. Orders?” a female voice crackled out.
“Initiate bombing run in district P-98F, coordinates 42.3 north, 28.5 west. Purgation spread.” the panther barked, keeping up his fire. He glanced at Taz. “Get your superiors to initiate a run in conjunction. Alpha T-07’s orders.”
The tiger scrambled for his commset, making contact quickly.
“Major Vendage reading you sergeant, report.”
The tiger gulped, then repeated the panther’s orders. There was momentary silence.
“The ole’ alpha, eh? Well, you heard him, boys. Get going!”
A few moments later, another voice crackled over the commset.
“Sir, we have sisters in our sights. Orders?”
“Follow in their wake, and support their run. Purgation spread.”
“Purgation, sir? But that’s - “
“We’re working with the Sisters for now; nothing is forbidden. Now, you have your orders! Get movin’! Vendage out.”
Taz’s communication link faded to static, and he set the receiver down. He grabbed his rifle, firing off a few more rounds. The armored groups were driving casualty rates too high.
He was beginning to think the bombs would never come, that they’d all die here, slaughtered by some gang.
Then, his vision was obscured by the hail of debris as a giant steel pod hit the ground. What the…? Two more dropped in quick succession, the latter a bit larger. The ones to drop second and third opened almost immediately, armored troops quickly finding cover.
He had forgotten the most key aspect of the Purgation spread: infantry. The first stage was to drop heavy infantry to the field, then bombard the area in front of them with a massive hail of bombs.
The first pod stayed closed. Gang members started to congregate near it, using it for cover. Then, the side farthest from the barrier exploded outwards, crushing the gang members.
There was a crunch as a man in a full suit of heavy power armor stepped on a skull. This man was a Gray Knight. The elite of the elite, he carried a power sword that glowed and hummed with it’s coating of energy, and bolted to his left fist was a twin-linked lasgun, which he fired with great vehemence at the enemy.
“To me, soldiers of the country! Fight on, for glory!” he yelled, raising his sword in the air. He fired off a few more shots, then had to replace the battery pack on his lasguns. A rogue gang member took advantage of this, swinging a jagged piece of power armor towards the knight. Taz barely had time to aim, but he managed to hit the gang member square enough to kill. The knight looked over, and nodded his thanks, returning to the fight.
It dragged on. The police forces began to surround the area, and bombers reduced most buildings to rubble. This part of the city would not be used for a long, long time.
Tazna stayed with the panther. He had a few minor injuries, so he had no real reason to stay behind, but he felt an urge to.
When the fighting had moved elsewhere, and the panther gone to rest, Taz sought him out. He found him where he had landed earlier, in the building with a hole.
The panther nodded as he neared. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Taz said, sitting beside him. They stared out through the hole for a long while, watching the planes bombard the buildings.
“I’m leaving tomorrow. For Turon. This place is too much for me.”
They sat in silence again, for a while.
Suddenly, the panther spoke. “I suppose you’re curious, eh? As to how I can command the Sisters.”
Taz nodded hesitantly.
The panther sighed deeply. “Well, first off, contact is not prohibited with them for high-ranking officers, especially super soldiers. I was in the army for a few years, kid. Tough work, it is. I ended up getting myself promoted, mostly due to my bionic parts. Without them, I’d be dead. But anyhow, I became a corporal, then sergeant, then major, and then, supersoldier.” His biological eye became misty, seeming to reflect on past memories. “Every soldier’s dream, it is. And I was offered it. But I turned it down.” He turned to Tazna. “Do you know why?”
The tiger shook his head, confused.
“Because if I took it, I wouldn’t be able to live anymore. Not a true life, anyways.” He gestured towards the combat zone with his left arm. “That gray knight that you saved, I doubt anyone knows his name. They’re not allowed to tell. They cannot do anything but serve. When they aren’t fighting, they are in stasis, or attending a ceremony, or training. I couldn’t live like that.”
Tazna blinked. Then blinked again. Tears seemed to be welling up in the panther’s eye. “I…wow. It’s always been my dream, but…it doesn’t seem so special. You’d just be a tool. Nothing but.”
The panther nodded. “Exactly. Now, how about we get around to introducing ourselves. I’m Tyme.” He reached over and presented his left hand to shake.
Tazna took it, shaking. “Tazna.”
A spark jumped between the two, unseen to biological or mechanical eyes.
A spark of passion, perhaps of union.
A spark, of fire.
“Perhaps…you wouldn’t mind a bit of help to move?”
