Yo I'm still doing this portrait thingie. By which I mean, I still try to do better portraits? I feel like I'm really lacking in the expression department, actually. And right now I try to focus on that instead of making it clean.

You could try and draw these expressions, it could help :D
I'd first try and watch how the eyes are, if they're normal, half closed, very open, etc, and then move onto the eyebrows and mouth. Nose doesn't usually help getting expressions, but being furries, ears could be nice to study as well

(Also for me with my expressions it started off hard. But! I started using my self as reference cause I'm too animated for my own good haha,,, But also what Morderek511 suggested is a very good idea as well!)
