Lu is a very...I suppose you could call her a "premier Assassin". She and her teammates are quite exclusive, so exclusive in fact that you wouldn't go through Downey to acquire their skills at all; you'd have to go through Lu's grandmother, Zhen Tei, who was an Agatean Assassin when she herself was young.

The backstory I've thought up is quite thrilling; anyway, let's just say that she and her teammates are allowed a little license to be different, to deviate a smidge from Guild rules. Drago (another teammate) has a silver wolf-pelt ushanka; Jacob has the cuffs and tail of his coat trimmed with vermine, and Mitzi's boots and gloves have pom-poms of fox fur on them.

I read that as Lu Tze for a second, actually, a semi-recurring character in the series, though he oesn't really get a day in the limelight until Thief of Time.

Well, it's all relative. Ankh Morpork is a place where you can live comfortably on 40 or 50 dollars a month, and the Assassin's make much more than that; I'm guessing that a 1000 dollars would be a paltry fee for them.
