Wonders of the Sea
By Balloondra
Nick stepped into a large storeroom of the Otterly Amazing Aquarium and found his manager, Clara, holding a huge, brown, baggy… thing. It was hard to make out beyond that with the awkward way she was holding it. Curiously, all the various supplies and equipment normally strewn around the room were shoved off to the side, leaving a wide open space in the middle of the room occupied merely by Taylor and her floppy item.
She perked up and smiled at the young man. “Hey! Glad you’re willing to help out!”
“Of course I am!” Nick insisted, and it was the truth. He loved working at the aquarium. “But, uhh…” He scratched the back of his head as he stepped closer. “I’m not sure what exactly I’m helping out with here.”
“This!” She beamed as she held up the pile of what seemed to be rubber, the closer Nick got.
Nick politely smiled back. “Um. What is that?”
Clara only smiled wider. “The new inflatable mascot suit, of course!”
Nick started; he tried very hard not to blush. “Th-the… the what n-now?”
“The higher-ups are saying kids aren’t really that engaged here these days, so they think if Harry the Otter himself would be around to offer hugs and ocean facts together, they’d have a better time and want to come back. I mentioned that since you’ve already got the bouncy energy and the fact-filled head for a job like this, you’d be a perfect fit! That is, if you want to?” She cocked her head at him.
Nick had to restrain himself from shouting for joy. “Want to? I’d love to!” He stepped up closer, readily accepting the rubber costume as she held it out to him. Wasting no time, he searched over its surface for the zipper in its back, tugged it down, and stepped inside.
It was a snug fit, though once his legs were properly inside, he found the suit fit almost too well! After stuffing his head and arms in, Clara zipped up his back, only confirming his hypothesis: outwardly, the suit was still awfully droopy and baggy, but the inner layer softly and snugly covered his whole body.
“Does it fit okay?” Clara asked.
“It’s absolutely perfect!” Nick responded with glee.
He nearly caught her smirking as she took an air compressor off the shelf, carrying it in both arms back to Nick. She proceeded to set the hefty device on the floor, plug it in, stuff the hose into the valve on the underside of the otter’s tail, and finally turn on the pump.
The whirr of the compressor and the hiss of flowing air filled Nick’s ears as the suit swelled around him. He was glad to be in costume now, allowing his incredibly heavy blush to go unnoticed. With each passing moment, the costume approached the shape of the mascot Nick had seen nearly every day the past couple of years— an anthropomorphic cartoon otter, quite heavyset and with a wide smile, with a plush figure and an open posture that just begged to be hugged!
Sure enough, Nick could feel “his” belly grow with softly squeaking paw-covered hands, swelling until it was nearly too big to reach around. Meanwhile, the thighs of the costume swelled to lend itself better to a heavyset look, wide footpaws blew up until Nick stood on a bouncy cushion of air, and the suit’s head swelled into a cartoony, grinning snout with full cheeks. Behind him, a tail blew up until it was held out behind him from the pressure.
Nick felt over the suit, marvelling at its squishy, springy puffiness while Clara continued to let the suit expand until the rubber outside was taut and the young man inside felt as though he had balloons pressed against every inch of his body— a feeling he wouldn’t trade for the world.
“Ah, you look perfect… Harry!” Clara snickered.
“Oh, thank you so much Miss Clara!” Nick got right into his role, putting on a boisterous voice to match his new girth and cheerful “expression”. “I can’t wait to meet all of our guests!”
Clara chuckled and put a hand on her hip. “See, I was told I also had to give you lessons on how to act like Harry, but looks like you’re a natural! That’ll be your shift for the day, so go get ‘em!”
“Will do, Miss Clara!” With a hefty laugh, “Harry” waddled right out the door.
...Once he squeezed through the frame, at least.
The following several hours were some of the best of Nick’s life. Aquarium patrons young and old were delighted by the puffy, huggable otter wandering around, and just as many were enraptured by his lessons on all the ocean creatures he had dutifully studied. The only breaks in his bliss came when he remembered that he would have to take the suit off at the end of the day, but with any luck, he’d be right back in the next day!
But time inevitably passed and the aquarium inevitably closed for the day, so after Nick enthusiastically waved goodbye to the last of the guests, he dragged his “paws” back to the storeroom to take the suit off. On the way, he met up with Clara, who somehow looked even more happy than Harry.
“Nick! You did amazing! I actually didn’t have time for all the parents talking about you and how they’d promise to be back, just because their kids wanted to spend more time with Harry!”
That brought up Nick’s spirits in a heartbeat. “Oh, really? I’m so glad! And… I love being Harry, so really, I’d be happy to do this every day.”
“Really? Every day?” Clara glanced at him, looking mildly surprised.
“Of course! This was, like, literally the best day ever for me.”
“I see…!” She smirked something evil.
Nick felt a twang of anxiety. “Uh… what is it?”
“The higher-ups told me to look for someone who felt that way.”
“Huh?! Why?”
“Easy! Just gotta…” She suddenly reached up between the costume’s shoulders, feeling for the top of the zipper. Then she tugged down, and Nick’s heart sank. Time to get out…
...But, as she tugged, he heard not a zipping sound, but a… peeling sound? Nick felt a bit of vertigo, and when it passed, his perspective seemed… different, somehow. Then Clara stepped out in front of him, still smirking.
Somehow, she was holding the zipper to the suit.
Shocked, Nick tried to feel behind himself. He could just barely reach the middle of the suit’s back, but despite his searching, he couldn’t feel the zipper! Had she really just pulled it off? How?
It suddenly dawned on him that he could feel the back of the suit otherwise.
“What… did you do…?” he quietly asked, not daring to make the conclusion himself.
“I made you Harry! Forever.” Clara replied, remarkably frank.
“Cl-Clara, I—” He let out a guffaw, quite intentionally slipping back into his Harry persona. “Why, Miss Clara! That was quite the magic trick!”
She giggled, taking the hefty otter’s wide paw in both her hands. “Alright, come along, now, Harry, we’ve already got a room set aside for you. And yes, this was all planned out. Some folks at R&D found quite the interesting book in the ocean, you see, about some goddess named Sai…”
Nick— no, Harry waddled and bounced after his manager with a new spring in his step and a lightness in his heart as he listened about the very real though oddly specific magic that had been discovered. He was flattered that they had used it on him first, but he tried not to let it get to his head— after all, he had a big day tomorrow, and plenty of new folks to teach the wonders of the sea!
